“Same old, same old,” Hanna said. “Hope I’m not bothering you.”

“Of course not.” Anastasia sat down across from her.

Hanna glanced around. “Where are your kids?”

“My oldest is at her grandma’s, and the two little ones are out with their dad,” Anastasia replied with a small smile. “They can never stay put at home.”

“I can’t stay put either,” Hanna murmured, so quietly it was almost like she was talking to herself.

When Rowan was here, Hanna never felt this alone.

But now he was gone, and she felt like the last person in the city. With nowhere to go and nobody to talk to, somehow she’d ended up at Anastasia’s door.

Anastasia stayed quiet. Hanna, her eyes searching, finally asked, “Anastasia, has he contacted you?”

She hadn’t heard anything from him. It scared her—really scared her.

She’d never pictured a day when she wouldn’t even know where he was in the world.

She could handle not being with him. But not knowing anything about him? That was unbearable.

He was the hope she’d clung to through all her youth.

Anastasia shook her head. It wasn’t exactly a lie—Rowan hadn’t reached out.

But she did know where he was.

After she and Monica had bumped into Rowan selling roasted sweet potatoes on the street, Anastasia had gone back once, just to see. From a distance, she’d caught sight of Rowan with a child, working the cart together.

The scene was so peaceful. So ordinary.

The child called Rowan “Dad.”

Anastasia didn’t know what the story was there—just figured Rowan must have had a son with someone.

Since Rowan seemed settled into a normal life, Anastasia didn’t want to mess that up.

Hanna’s eyes lost their light. She whispered, “He’s… really not coming back, is he?”
