Katelyn left Autumn completely speechless, her face drained and furious.
If it weren’t for her pregnancy, Autumn would’ve gotten up and gone toe-to-toe with Katelyn right then and there.
But Katelyn just kept going, “Thank goodness the universe was on our side and my son found himself a good wife. If he’d married your daughter, the Salstrom family’s luck would’ve run dry for the next eight generations.”
“Katelyn!” Autumn snapped, forcing herself up from the wheelchair, “Don’t push me too far. The Salstroms ruined the Browns, destroyed my daughter, and you’ve got the nerve to say something like that? You’re a mother too—”
“That’s exactly why I understand,” Katelyn shot back, cold as ice. “People need dignity, just like trees need bark. If you want to throw yours away, no one can stop you. The law is fair, and you’re not above it.”
“You—” Autumn was so worked up, pain stabbed through her belly.
She was about to fire off a comeback when Mrs. Johnson came downstairs, smiling and trying to smooth things over. “Mrs. Salstrom, Mrs. Walker, why don’t we go out to the garden and see the new flowers I planted? I picked up a few special varieties—come take a look.”
But Autumn wasn’t having any of it.
“Mrs. Johnson, I’m really not feeling well today. I’ll head home. I’ll visit again another time.” Her face was stone cold.
Mrs. Johnson didn’t press her to stay, not wanting round two of their argument.
“All right, Mrs. Walker, let me walk you out.” Mrs. Johnson wheeled her to the door.
The driver was already waiting outside.
Autumn got home still fuming. Mr. Walker came in to find her taking her anger out on the housekeeper. He walked over and asked, “What’s going on, Autumn? Who got you this upset?”
“Who else? The Salstroms.” Autumn’s expression was sour. “You’re always covering for them, and now they’re turning around and stabbing me in the back. You don’t even know how nasty Katelyn was to me just now.”
She complained as she wiped away tears, looking completely wronged.
“I thought you were going to Mrs. Johnson’s. How’d you end up fighting with Katelyn again?” Mr. Walker frowned, already guessing where this was headed.
“Katelyn was there too.” Autumn rested a hand on her belly, glaring at him. “Are you really going to keep defending the Salstroms? Are you just going to let them walk all over me?”
Mr. Walker tried to reason with her. “It’s not that serious—”
“Mr. Walker, I’m your wife, and you’re supposed to be the one in charge. Why are you so afraid of the Salstroms, letting outsiders bully your own wife?” Autumn’s anger just kept building, the resentment boiling over.
