The shrill vibration of Alejandro’s phone split through the soft quiet of the morning. He had just pulled Nivera closer, his lips grazing her temple, when the sound forced his hand.
He cursed under his breath, dragging himself out of bed, the sheets slipping from his body.
Nivera watched him pace toward the corner of the room where his phone lay, his shoulders already tight, his posture screaming tension.
He ran a hand through his tousled hair before snatching the phone from the nightstand. His tone was clipped the second he answered.
“Yeah.” His voice dropped into that tone–the one that instantly put walls between them. Business, blood, danger.
Nivera let out a quiet sigh, sitting up against the pillows. For a moment she simply studied him, the sharp line of his jaw flexing as he listened, his hand tightening around the phone.
She hated this—the way the world seemed determined to pull him from her even in the softest of mornings.
To distract herself from the silence stretching between them, she slipped from the bed. Her legs trembled faintly, the reminder of last night still lingering in her muscles, but she ignored it.
She padded across the room, collecting the shirt he had abandoned on the chair and slipping it over her frame.
It smelled of him–cedar, and something darker- it grounded her even as unease crawled under her skin.
She busied herself by straightening the bed, tugging the sheets back into order. It was a pointless task- Alejandro’s staff would redo it later–but it gave her something to do while his low voice murmured sharp Spanish phrases she only half caught.
She then padded to the vanity. With slow, deliberate care, she began combing out her tangled hair.
The intimacy of the night still clung to her skin, and though her body ached, it was a sweet ache, a reminder of his touch. She traced the faint red mark along her collarbone with her finger, her lips twitching into a smile.
Finally, the call ended. He stood there for a beat, phone dangling from his hand, his shoulders slumped with an exhaustion that was more mental than physical.
Nivera turned toward him, her voice soft. “Nothing’s improved, has it?”
His eyes met hers, dark and heavy. He didn’t bother with a lie. Slowly, he shook his head.
Her throat tightened. “You have to go, don’t you?”
He hesitated before nodding once. “Yes,” His voice was quiet, and exhausted. “I’ll drop you off at Zabelle’s. You’ll be safe there.”

Nivera frowned. “I can’t. I have a meeting with Celeste. It’s important. We’re finalizing some details for the campaign.”
His jaw flexed. “Nivera-”
“No,” she interrupted, crossing her arms, his shirt swaying against her thighs. “I’ll be fine.”
He studied her, that unblinking gaze that always made her feel seen and challenged all at once. Finally, he exhaled, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Fine. But Martins will take you. And I’ll double the escort.”
She smiled faintly, though the heaviness between them didn’t lift. “Fine.”
The two then went ahead to get ready. Alejandro chose his usual armor–a dark tailored suit, jacket thrown over broad shoulders, the glint of his watch catching the light. He looked every bit the ruthless king he was.
Nivera kept it simpler: sleek trousers, a cream blouse, her hair pulled into soft waves. She caught Alejandro watching her once as she slipped on her earrings, his expression unreadable.
When they descended the grand staircase, two guards were already waiting by the front door. Alejandro’s presence was enough to make them stiffen.
He didn’t so much as glance their way, but Nivera caught the subtle signal of his hand–the kind of order given without words.
The ride was tense. Alejandro’s SUV glided through the streets, flanked by two black cars filled with guards.
His hand rested on Nivera’s thigh, not for comfort but for reassurance–of her presence, her safety. She laced her fingers over his anyway, grounding them both.
When they reached Celeste’s building, Alejandro leaned in, his lips brushing her temple. “Text me when you’re done.”
She smirked faintly. “You sound like a husband.”
His eyes darkened at that, but he said nothing, only kissed her once before sliding out and signaling Martín to take position.

Nivera’s meeting with Celeste went smoothly, or at least, as smoothly as business with the famously unpredictable woman could.
They discussed a campaign, ideas swirling between them, Celeste’s sharp mind cutting through doubts with
ease.
Once she realized she was almost done, she texted Alejandro just as he had asked her to and he immediately responded telling her he was close and on his way.
For a brief while, Nivera allowed herself to relax. To feel normal. She forgot about the chaos outside and if there was a good thing out of the whole thing, it was that she was too engaged to worry.

But as she stepped out of the glass doors, out of the building the air shifted.

The street seemed quieter than usual. Too quiet. The guards who had been stationed at the curb looked tense, their eyes scanning the surroundings.
Nivera frowned. “Martins?”
He moved quickly toward her, his hand already at the small of her back. “Let’s go. Now.”
Before she could ask why, the world erupted.
Gunfire cracked through the afternoon.
Loud, sharp, echoing off buildings. The scream of pedestrians tore through the air as people scattered, ducking behind cars, diving into doorways.
“¡Vámonos!” Martín barked, shoving Nivera toward the SUV.
Her heart thundered as bullets pinged off metal, shattering windows. The guards opened fire in return, forming a wall of bodies around her as they pushed her forward.
But the attackers were prepared. Two black vans screeched into view, doors sliding open as masked men spilled out, rifles raised.
Nivera barely had time to gasp before Martins yanked her down, shoving her behind a concrete pillar. “Stay down!” he roared.
The street was chaotic. Bullets tore through the air, the acrid stench of gunpowder choking her lungs. She pressed herself against the pillar, trembling, clutching at the shirt beneath her blazer like it could shield her.
What the fuck had just happened? She had been having a good day and it all changed in the blink of an eye.
One of the masked men spotted her. His gun swung in her direction.
Her scream caught in her throat.
Martins moved faster. He stepped in front of her, firing off rounds, dropping two of the men before they could get closer. But another attacker flanked them from the side, too close, too fast-
The gun went off.
Nivera felt it before she understood it. A burning, searing pain tearing through her side, white–hot and merciless.
She collapsed with a strangled cry, her hand flying to the wound as warmth spread between her fingers.
“Nivera!” Martins‘ voice was distant, drowned out by the ringing in her ears. He crouched over her, his face a blur. “Stay with me. Stay with me!”
Her vision swam. Sirens wailed in the distance, faint and far away. She tried to breathe but each inhale sent fire licking up her ribs.
