Alejandro’s arm was still around Nivera, his thumb stroking the back of her hand, grounding himself as much
as her.
Alejandro’s phone buzzed, breaking the tense silence that had settled between him and Nivera inside the car.
He ignored it at first, unwilling to let go of her warmth, but the third vibration was sharper, urgent. He pulled it from his pocket with a frown, thumb sliding across the screen.
His dark eyes scanned the text, and almost instantly his expression shifted. His jaw tightened, and his brows furrowed.
Nivera felt the change instantly–the subtle tension in his body, the way his thumb paused over her hand. She lifted her head just enough to catch the frown darkening his features. “What happened?” she asked softly, worry bleeding into her tone.
Alejandro hesitated, eyes still locked on the glowing screen, before finally lowering the phone and turning to her. “One of my men just sent me the report,” he said finally, his voice measured.
“Report?” she echoed, blinking at him in confusion.
“The investigation,” Alejandro clarified, his dark eyes meeting hers. “The one you asked me to conduct… about your brother.”
Her heart skipped. She had forgotten all about that. For a moment, she didn’t breathe. “And? What does it say?” What he would say next would determine the trajectory of her relationship with Liam.
Vivian she didn’t care for, but Liam? She had a glimmer of hope for him.
Alejandro exhaled slowly, his thumb brushing over the side of his phone as though dragging the words out of himself. “He wasn’t ignoring you, Nivera. Around the time you left… your brother suffered from a severe accident. A car crash, from what I see. It seems it was in search of you after he got the news. His injuries were extensive–spinal and internal damage. It took multiple surgeries and over a year of rehabilitation before he was able to walk properly again.”
Her lips parted in shock, but no words came out, the air in her chest turning sharp and jagged. The one she had resented for not reaching out. The one she believed had abandoned her as she clawed her way through exile.
“What…? No… that-” She shook her head, eyes glassy. “I thought he just… he just didn’t want to see me. He didn’t want to…” Her voice broke, and guilt crashed over her like a tidal wave.
Alejandro reached for her hand, stroking it gently, grounding her. “Your mother was caring for him all this time. That’s why he didn’t reach out. He couldn’t.”
Nivera closed her eyes as her shoulders trembled. Memories swirled in her head–the loneliness, the silence from her family, the bitterness she carried believing they had abandoned her. And all this time, her brother had been fighting for his life.
“I… I didn’t know,” she whispered, her voice trembling.

Alejandro’s grip on her hand tightened slightly. “Of course you didn’t. You couldn’t have.”
“But I should have,” she blurted.

“You couldn’t have known,” Alejandro interrupted firmly, voice deep and steady. “Don’t do that to yourself.”
Taking a deep breath, her eyes met Alejandro’s gaze. “But I should have tried harder. I should have looked for answers. Instead, I just… I just hated them. I hated him. And while I was angry, he was…” Her voice cracked again. “He was fighting to survive.”
Alejandro listened quietly, his thumb never stopping its slow motion across the back of her hand. “You did what you could with the knowledge you had, Nivera. Blame won’t change what happened.”
“He went through it alone.”
Alejandro leaned in slightly, his voice low and firm. “He wasn’t alone. He had your mother. And now he still has a chance to have you.”
She sniffled, looking down at their joined hands, surprised at how much his comfort soothed her even now. “I feel so selfish.”
“You’re human,” he murmured. “And now you have a choice. You can keep punishing yourself… or you can reach out to him.”
Her gaze lifted sharply to his. “Reach out?”
Alejandro nodded. “Call him. Meet with him. Talk. You’ve carried this weight long enough—it’s time you both set it down.”
She hesitated, torn between fear and longing. “I don’t know if I can face him. Not after everything.”
“Then let me make it simple.” His tone was firm, brooking no argument. “You need to go to him, Nivera. I can keep you here, but it won’t fix what’s broken. This is one fight you have to face yourself.”
She blinked at him, stunned. Part of her wanted to stay–because staying meant Alejandro, meant safety, and meant not confronting the painful truth. But his words pierced through her hesitation.
It was indeed long overdue. He had tried reaching out on multiple occasions, but she had shut him off multiple times. Not anymore.
“Alright,” she whispered. “I’ll see him.”

Hours later, Nivera stood outside her brother’s home alone. Alejandro still had things to take care of back at the station, and so he asked his men to follow her there.
Her heart hammered against her ribs, palms clammy as she approached the front door.
Liam had been more than elated to hear that she wanted to see him and had immediately sent the address.

She lifted her hand before she could ring the doorbell, the door opened, and there he was.

Fuck, he looked so healthy no one would have ever believed he got into a fatal accident. She knew it was the work of her father that everything was kept from the media.
“Nivera…” His voice was hoarse, filled with disbelief as though surprised she actually came. “Come on in.”
Her lips trembled as she crossed the distance between them. She clung to him, sobbing quietly into his shoulder, the guilt and relief spilling out all at once.
“Why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t you let me know? I–I’m sorry I wasn’t there.”
“Because I couldn’t. I was barely conscious for months. And when I finally came around, I was too broken, too focused on just learning to walk again. And well, who knew it’d take over a year to heal?” he chuckled.
Her breath hitched. “I thought you abandoned me.”
“I never did,” he said fiercely. “You’re my sister. I wanted nothing more than to protect you, but I couldn’t even protect myself.” His expression softened then. “It was Mother who kept me alive. She was there every step, through every surgery, every sleepless night. She chose me.”
Nivera closed her eyes, more tears slipping free. For years she had painted her mother as complicit in her father’s cruelty, but now… now the picture was blurred.
“I should have been there,” she whispered brokenly.
“No,” her brother said firmly, gripping her shoulders. “You had your own battles to fight. And look at you— you survived. You’re standing here. That’s what matters.”
“I want you to tell me everything that happened,” she demanded.
For a beat, silence stretched between them, heavy with everything left unsaid.
Inside, they sat across from each other, words spilling like a dam finally breaking.
