Chapter 48
When we get to Finance class, I’m relieved to see that she’s there. However, she’s moved from our usual seats to sit off to the side, away from us. Cassic looks at us, then walks over to sit with Sebastiana. She murmurs something to her, then Tiana moves her things out of the seat next to her, letting Cassie sit beside her.
Alpha Ezra calls on Sebastiana once during class, but she stares him down with eyes so cold I swear I can feel the temperature in the room dip ten degrees.
Cole looks me, but I look away. Now that she’s said it, I can see a different side to my relationship. with Sebastiana. It’s the relationship that I thought we had. My mind is at war with itself. I so desperately want to believe her, to believe that what we had was real. And her actions are speaking louder than her sharp words ever could. She’s clearly saying that passing the Academy isn’t her number one goal. She skipped sparring class, told off the instructors, refused to answer a question in this class, and basically threatened to leave the Academy.
Later that night, when she doesn’t show up for the sex class, I realize how much she meant what she said to me this morning.
If her actions are screaming this loud, that winning at the Academy isn’t her number one goal, then why can I still not let go of the niggling doubt in my head that everything between us was just a ruse?
Sebastiana
On Wednesday, after Finance class, I asked Cassie how they broke her.
“They came for my weakness, Sebi, just like they did for all of us.
”
“And what’s your weakness?” I ask her with a teasing grin. I’m so thankful that she came to sit beside me. I was afraid that by separating myself from Shane that I’d separate myself from all our friends. But she’d instantly come to sit with me.
She laughs, but it doesn’t reach her eyes. “Fear, of course. Fear of failure, fear of not passing the Academy, but most of all, fear that, if I do pass the Academy, what if I fail an Alpha and because of me, their pack falls into financial ruin?”
“Damn. That’s harsh,” I say. I’m starting to feel like I got off easy. All I got was a bad grade, disappointment, and public humiliation. The public humiliation part seems to be standard when breaking an Alpha, so really mine was just the bad grade and disappointment, which was enough
for me.
As we walk back to our dorms, I slide my arm through hers.
“What have you told me about numbers?” I ask.
She gives me a side-eye glance, “That they never lie. They’re constant.”
