Chapter 39
Then, he’d looked away from me as if I didn’t matter.
I felt
my checks burn and my stomach clench. It’s my worst fear. Tears pricked my eyes, and it took everything in me not to break down right there in front of everyone. Nicholas would probably have made some snide comment if he wasn’t still reeling from his own break.
They knew exactly how to get to me, and they did it. They exploited my weakness and then presented it to the entire class on a silver platter, showing everyone that while I might be related to two of the instructors, I’m not worthy of being on the leaderboard. I might not even be worthy of attending the Academy.
“T?” Shane whispered.
I shook my head furiously, knowing that if he said anything at all to me, I’d lose the battle of my tears. I would NOT cry in front of everyone. It would only cement my humiliation.
After class, Shane tried to hug me.
“Please don’t. I … I just need to be alone right now,” I said, rushing back to the dorms. I barely made it to my room before the dam broke.
I skipped dinner and when Shane knocked on my door later that night, bringing me a plate of food, I told him I needed some time. He handed me a box of tissues and told me that he was there
if I needed to talk.
This morning, I dragged myself out of bed. When I made the mistake of looking in the mirror, I flinched. I look as awful as I feel. But I can’t let that stop me. I have to pull myself together. Sparring class is the class I excel in, so I dragged myself to breakfast. I realized immediately that the entire cafeteria is quiet, with everyone talking in whispers as if someone died. Those who haven’t yet been broken are obviously waiting for their time and those of us who have are still feeling devastated.
I sat next to Shane at breakfast. He squeezed my thigh but thankfully didn’t say anything. It was Justin who made me feel marginally better.
“Hell week sucks,” he says, holding out his fist.
“Yeah, it does,” I say, bumping his fist with mine. I feel a ghost of a smile on my face, but it’s gone almost as quickly as it started.

When it’s time to go to sparring class, we all walk out together. When Dane asks who wants to ride The Beast, I don’t raise my hand. I know myself well enough to know that I’d only embarrass myself today. I’m already feeling humiliated and the last thing I want to do is fall on level one in front of everyone. I need to get my head together before riding The Beast again.
Only half the class chose to ride The Beast today, and when Dane and Ryan begin breaking us into sparring groups, Alpha Ezra calls out to me.
He nods his head and I walk over, not sure I’m ready to face the man who has made me feel so inadequate.
“Walk with me,” he says, turning to walk away from class.
