I do as she says, just getting settled when she walks in. “Okay, let’s take a look,” she says, opening the gown and gently pressing against the area that was bruised.

“Any pain?” she asks, watching me closely.

“No, doctor.”

She presses her fingers more firmly, but there’s no pain, only discomfort.

“Okay, let’s take an x–ray,” she says, and leads me to the x–ray room.

When we’re done, she sends me back to my room and joins me a few moments later.

“Okay, young Alpha. You’ll need to wait another day to ride The Beast…”

“What?” I gasp.

She stops and looks at me. “Do you want to end up with broken ribs and have to be out for several more days?”

I sigh. “No.”

“Okay, then. I know you’re anxious to get back into it, but it’s only the third day. No one ever finishes The Beast this soon. No one.”

I nod. I’ll just have to be better tomorrow when I’m back on it.

“What about sparring?” I ask.

“Do

you feel capable of taking a hit to the ribs?” she asks me.

“Yes,” I say, wanting to be able to participate today.

“If you start feeling any pain, if you hear a crack, you are to stop immediately.”

“Yes, doctor.”

“You can go. I’ll let Alpha Dane know you’re cleared for sparring today and The Beast tomorrow as long as you don’t reinjure yourself.”

“Thank you!” I say, hopping off the table and getting dressed before jogging over to the cafeteria.

As I jog, I can feel the tightness in my ribs, and I understand why Dr. Whit said I can’t ride The Beast yet. I’m not fully healed and when I exert myself, I can feel it.

However, I won’t let that stop me. I have no intention of sitting out today.

When I arrive at the cafeteria, everyone is already there.

“Tiana,” Shane calls from where he’s sitting with Cole, Justin, and Cassandra. I wave, get my food, then join them.

“What’s the verdict?” Shane asks.

Before I can answer, Dane walks up behind us.

“So, you’re sparring today?” he asks me.

“Yes, Alpha,” I say, looking up at my uncle. I know him well enough to know that the tight press

of his lips means he doesn’t agree, but he’s not a doctor, so he can’t argue with Dr. Whit.

“Any pain at all and I want to hear about. I’ll be watching you, young Alpha,” he says.

“Yes, Alpha.”

When he walks away, Shane looks at me. “No Beast?”

I shake my head. “Not until tomorrow. But at least I can spar today,” I say.

“I’ll try not to get too far ahead,” Shane says, grinning.

“Try not to break anything,” I say seriously.

“Yeah, apparently that’s pretty common,” Justin says.

“It is from what Dr. Whit says,” I agree.

I eat quickly since I came in late and by the time we walk out to sparring class, I’m feeling better and ready to spar.

However, everyone has a chance to ride The Beast first. Shane and Cole raise their hands quickly when Dane asks who wants to ride.

“Alpha Cole,” he calls first.

Cole challenges Dane and once again falls at the third challenge. When he comes back down and passes me, I whisper, “Don’t over think it.”

He turns to me, like he’s about to argue, like he thinks I meant not to overthink how far he got, but I give him a look before he can. His eyes narrow and he nods slowly, thinking through what I

said.
