“I think you should lie down, Ella,” suggested Tanner with a concerned look on his face.

Feeling that it might be best rather than being here and mulling over the fact that she had lost some important part of her life, she nodded then walked towards the bedroom. She closed the door behind her then approached the bed. She sat on the edge of it at first as her hand touched the fabric. Ella closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She was hoping that the doctor and Javier had been right, that coming back here would bring some of her memories back, and yet thus far, all she could remember was useless things such as where she had bought some of her furniture.

Slowly she brought herself down and lied there on top of the mattress. She could hear some voices on the other side of the door then when she saw the doorknob being turned, she quickly shut her eyes and even her breathing. It seemed that it was Tanner who had gone to check on her. “She is asleep,” she heard Tanner say before going out and closing the door behind him.

Then she started hearing them talking. It was Damon who first asked, “What the hell did you do?”

“I did not do anything,” answered Javier with an exasperated sigh. She had heard him sighing multiple times lately and knew that she was the source of his frustration albeit there was so little she could do about it. “I wish there is something I could do but the doctor said that for now, all we could do is wait.”

“She will be fine, Javier.” This time, it was Tanner. “Just give her some space. I know it is hard for you, we all know how much you love her but right now, you may suffocate her by being too close to her. Let her be for a while.”

There was a small pause before she could hear her fiancé’s voice again. “Are you suggesting that I should move out?”

“We have been thinking lately, Jav,” said Damon slowly as if he was afraid he might accidentally offend him. “So far, all we know is that she has lost her memory of you. She knows her mother, she even remembers her father. She also remembers all of her childhood memories. Her mother has asked her the other day just to confirm it.”

“Maybe there is a reason why she could not remember the last four years,” added Tanner.

Javier was quick to know where this conversation was heading. “So you both think I have done something that might trigger her memory to simply erase my existence from her memories.”

“Look, I know it sucks but we think that might be the case.”

“We can take care of her for you, Jav,” offered Damon. “We could help her remember too.”

It seemed that Javier was still not fully convinced because Tanner jumped into the conversation again, “And once she gets better and slowly regains her memory, you can come back and help her fully recover.”

“Just leave her alone for a few days,” reiterated Damon. “It is for the best.”

“I do not know if I could do that,” said Javier weakly, his voice sounded as if he was being tortured and had only so little time left. “The last two weeks, watching her on the bed lying there unconscious has been a torment but now, this is more than that. The way she looked at me, there was nothing there. No recollection whatsoever. She even looked scared and shocked when I kissed her.”

“Wait a minute,” interrupted Damon in a bossy tone. “You did what exactly, Mister?”

“I kissed her,” answered Javier matter of factly. “She woke up and I just could not help myself.”

“No wonder she is so scared of you. Imagine not remembering anything and the second you woke up, a stranger kissed you!” growled Damon in frustration.

“I did not know that she could not remember me that time.” Although the second kiss which had been witnessed by Pedro was purely on purpose and he had been aware of her memory loss but he felt that mentioning this to Damon and Tanner would not help rest his case.

“I will do anything for her,” he promised, “no matter how hard, even if it kills me.”

Inside the bedroom, Ella stared blankly ahead at the window.

I will do anything for her. No matter how hard. Even if it kills me.

Those words rang and echoed back and forth inside her mind. Grabbing the nearest pillow to hug to her middle, holding her stomach against the clenching pain and terrible disorientation that settled inside her, she rocked slowly back and forth while telling herself to breathe.

Yet his voice bombarded her, and she could not shake the fierce and possessive tone she overheard at the hospital, and now this sad, heartbroken vow that he would do anything for her. She did not know this man, and he spoke of her as though she was the reason he was alive. How could she have forgotten someone who obviously cared so much for her?

Closing her eyes, she tried to do what she had meant to do when she had entered her bedroom. She finally let drowsiness and sleepiness taking over her and fell into a deep slumber. Even in her sleep, his words still rung like a mantra over and over again.

I will do anything for her. No matter how hard. Even if it kills me.
