By the time Javier had returned, both of Ella’s parents had left and she was sleeping. He brought himself slowly down to the seat on the left side of her bed. His elbow was placed on the arm of the chair while he rested his head on his palm as he continued to stare at her. The memory of their life together flashed before his eyes and it brought a small smile to his face.

He remembered the first night he had slept in her flat. She had been standing in the kitchen, making dinner for them, and he had just gotten out from the shower. He had been immediately awestruck by the sight of her. She had leaned in to taste the soup she had been making then as if she had realized that he had been staring, she had turned her face to him and smiled. "I do not think I can make this as good as my mother but it is decent." She had giggled, her face had been red from blushing and the heat from the stove. "Do you want to have a taste?"

He clung to the towel on his neck as he approached her. "I love you."

It had taken her by surprise since he had never been the type to say those three words very often. He had always been the type who only said it a few times but showed it every day. Ella had blinked then she smiled fondly. "I love you too."

And when she took a spoonful of the soup and brought it to his mouth, he accepted it with a smile. "It is good," he said before he even tasted it.

"You just said that to make me feel less bad," she commented, narrowing her eyes as she tried not to laugh. "Try it again and tell me honestly." She spoonfed him again and waited expectantly.

"It is good," he said after a short while.

"Really?" Her eyes twinkled in surprised happiness.

"Yeah, truly," he confirmed then leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. At that time, he had known that there was no way he could live without her.

There was a soft knock on the door which wiped away those daydreaming and slammed him back to harsh reality. He gave one more look at Ella before paying his attention to the door and watched a nurse carrying a folder strolling in.

"Good afternoon," the nurse greeted with a smile but once she looked up and met his blue eyes, her smile froze. "Javier."

Javier gritted his teeth, his eyes were full of accusation when he asked, "What the hell are you doing here? I have specifically informed the hospital that I will not move Ella around provided that you are not allowed to come anywhere near Ella." He omitted the bit where the doctor had informed him about Ella's weak condition which would have prevented her from being moved and actually had been the reason why Javier had let her stay in this hospital.

As he turned his gaze slightly to Aimee, he saw pain mixed with guilt and remorse there. Even though he did not have to forgive her, he knew that she needed his forgiveness in order for her to move on. Weighing on his option, he realized that there was no way holding to the past. Aimee had made a mistake and she had asked for his forgiveness numerous times. Nobody was perfect. People learned from their past mistakes. He certainly hoped Aimee would learn from hers. "I will never forget," he said to her, locking his eyes to hers, "but I forgive you."

Aimee immediately rushed to his side and held his hand. "Thank you." Tears started to stream down her face. "That is good enough for me. Thank you."

He was about to reply to her when he heard Ella's voice. "What is with the noises?"

Javier turned and saw that Ella had been staring at the two of them. Her dark brown eyes fell to their entwined fingers and stayed there for a few moments before she looked up again to meet his eyes. There was no emotion on her face and somehow that had hurt him more than if she had said something hurtful.

Although Taylor Swift had once said that people could move on without having to forgive or forget, that we could simply be indifferent about it, this author thinks that Javier should forgive Aimee. Not because he has to, but out of the kindness in his heart because she needs it.
