Chapter 146

Logan

The car ride home is silent. I can feel emily’s eyes on the side of my face, watching me, waiting for any kind of reaction after I caught her hugging a man that I do not know, a man that I do not trust in our lives. I say nothing, though, allowing the silence to speak for itself.

Is it petty of me to act like this? Is it petty of me to want her to keep a distance between her and other men in her life? Is it bad that I wish that she would let me in on the secrets of our life instead of keeping me out?

Logan, she whispers my name. It sends a chill down my spine. don’t look in her direction and instead of focus my eyes on the road. Please, talk to me.

What is there to say? How do I approach the situation in which I am the aggressor, the one person who is displeased with everything that she does?

Jack and I are friends,Emily’s voice trembles. Do I scare her? He was there the day Derek died. He had information that was useful to me-

Was it the truth?I ask, interrupting her in the middle of her sentence. I finally turned to look at her, her beautiful face coming into view. Do you know if he is telling you the truth or is he telling you what you want to hear?

Emilie does not respond. I make a tchsound and turn back to the road, watching as the light turns red. I step on the brake a little too harshly, our bodies jutting forward.

He wants to help, emily’s voice is low, quiet. She sounds unsure of herself, questioning why she even spoke to him the first place. What he said was useful. He saw the photos of us in court and was going to reach out to me before I messaged him first.

Okay,I nod my head. If I were to say anything else, I think it would cause more problems between us than we need.

Justokay?Emily repeats my word, sounding unsure of why I would speak in such a way.

I know this by simply looking at her. She turns away from me, opting to look at the outside world instead of me. It’s my own fault, though, for allowing myself to be an asshole towards her. She doesn’t deserve this. She’s going through enough as it is.

Imy voice trails off. I clear my throat and adjust myself in my seat, glancing over at her. I don’t want you to leave me

either.

Why would I leave you?She turns to face me, her voice accusatory in nature. It irritates me. Jack is just a friend. He doesn’t

want to-

Rekindle a romance?I finish the sentence for her.

The light turns green. I don’t move, cars honking at us as they drive past, yelling at us through their windows. We sit there until the light turns red again.

Why are you like this?” Emily asks. She turns to fully face me, her arms crossed over her chest. I shake my head, not wanting to get into it with her, but she has other ideas. No, don’t shut me down. You can’t open up a can of worms and expect to close it after. Once it’s open: it’s open.

I don’t trust him,I try to reason with her. It only irritates her more, a grown flying from her lips. I don’t trust any of the men in your life. They have all screwed you over and have proven to us that-

To us?!Emily raises her voice.

Yes, us! We are a team now, Emily!I match her volume, hands gripping the steering wheel like my life depends on it. Every single man that has walked into your life, has wanted to ruin you! It’s like they don’t want to see you get married to me!

What does this have to do with the wedding?! Why do you keep bringing it up?! why are you so jealous of men who mean nothing to me?!Emily yells.

then why are you always hugging them!I tried to call myself down, wanting to show her my side of things. I’m sent photos of you kissing Michael and now I have seen you hug Jack! Are you going to go after my brother next?

Wow,Emily says in an exasperated tone. She leans back against the car door, looking at me. I can’t believe that you would say something like that.

There is a clear sense of betrayal in her voice. I have crossed a line boundary, one that I should’ve never messed with in the first place. I immediately regret my decision to open up about this in the first place, avoiding her gaze as silence overtake my

mouth.

The light turns green again. This time, I press my foot to the pedal driving its down the street. The radio plays a love song, completely opposite to the love that is slowly withering away between Emily and L
