In the afternoon, Anya wrapped up her paperwork and made her way to Ms. Zheng’s office.
After work, she couldn’t help but linger by the door, waiting for Milka. The second Milka stepped out of the building, Anya practically skipped over, throwing her arms around her in a burst of excitement. “Milka, I adore you! Please, hurry up and become my aunt already—I seriously can’t wait, you’re just too awesome!”
Milka couldn’t help laughing. “What are you talking about? Aunt?” Then, noticing how animated Anya was, she asked, “Did you do what I suggested this afternoon?”
Anya grinned and nodded. “I went straight to Ms. Zheng, just like you told me I should. I told her everything. She gave me a hard time for keeping things bottled up and said I need to speak up sooner. She even teased me for being too trusting. But honestly, I could tell she was on my side—she was really looking out for me.
And get this—later in the afternoon, Ms. Zheng called out Patty for what she did to me. She didn’t mention any names, but everyone in the office knew exactly who she meant. Patty’s face was priceless!”
Anya was practically glowing as she shared her little victory with Milka at the door.
Milka slipped her arm through Anya’s as they strolled toward the car, exuding that protective, big-sister vibe. “You’re Ms. Zheng’s assistant, you know. If someone messes with you, it makes her look bad too. No decent boss would let their assistant take the fall like that. And honestly, if Ms. Zheng was the type to listen to Patty’s flattery and ignore the truth, she wouldn’t have made it this far.”
Anya was so giddy she was half tempted to skip all the way home.
Milka offered her a ride, but Anya waved it off. She didn’t want to get used to hitching rides—she figured if she started now, it would just become a habit, and she’d rather not. Better to nip it in the bud.
“My brother Chad’s picking me up anyway. Drive safe, Milka! See you tomorrow!”
Milka watched the cheerful girl bounce away, her smile catching on Milka until she was grinning too. “Alright, see you!”
Later that evening, when Leo got home, Anya was practically buzzing with impatience. “Chad, you have to ask Uncle Mars when he’s finally going to make Milka my aunt! I can’t wait anymore!”
Leo just looked at her, half amused. “Why are you so anxious about their business?”
Mars raised his eyebrows. What a kid! Even the in-laws in the Andre family were impressive. He already liked her.
Milka read the message and just shook her head in silence. This silly girl! She treated Anya like a little cousin, but Anya was over here scheming to make her an aunt.
Under Milka’s watchful eye, Mars replied: Very soon.
Milka: “...Delete that.”
But it was too late.
Anya had already seen it and replied in a flash: Uncle, you need to step up your game! Milka’s amazing—plenty of people have their eyes on her. But don’t worry, I’ll keep an eye out for any rivals. If anyone tries anything, I’ll investigate and report straight to Uncle Mars!
