Talking about his old plans, Jarvis Peters looked both regretful and a little sulky.
Camila Davis could practically picture the whole scene from his words and almost burst out laughing.
Was this guy for real?
He’d actually considered cutting ties with his family just to read a rival’s medical books? The lengths he’d go to!
Still, as funny as it was, Camila didn’t find herself disliking Jarvis. In fact, she found him rather entertaining, so she glanced over at Dennis Williams for his opinion.
Dennis caught her look and smiled gently. “Camila, you can choose your own friends. It’s entirely up to you.”
So that was his way of saying Jarvis was acceptable company?
Camila caught the hint, turned back to Jarvis, and said, “Since you’re so keen on being friends, Mr. Peters, I’ll happily accept this medical book.”
The effect on Jarvis was instant—his whole face lit up with excitement. He leaned in, eager as a puppy. “Camila, take a look around! If you see anything else you like, it’s yours. Take it all—my treat!”
It was almost hard to believe this was the same Jarvis Peters from just a few minutes ago.
Camila stifled a laugh, worried he might actually try to pack up his entire stall for her. “That’s enough—I’ll just take this one. The rest is all yours; don’t you need to run your business?”
Jarvis just grinned, shameless as ever. “No worries! Honestly, I wasn’t even planning to show up today. If I hadn’t been kicked out of the house at the crack of dawn, I’d still be in bed. Just give me a second!”
With that, he turned and started stuffing everything from the counter into a bag, dumping the whole lot into Aaron’s arms. “Here, take these, too.”
“Uh… what?” Aaron froze, completely at a loss for what to do—he couldn’t exactly refuse, but accepting felt equally awkward. He looked helplessly to Mr. Williams and Camila for guidance.
Jarvis, meanwhile, couldn’t care less. “Mr. Williams, Camila, I bet you’re both after some real treasures, right? I know all the best spots. Come on, let’s go!”
Without waiting for an answer, Jarvis barreled off ahead, not even glancing back.
Camila stared after him, stunned. “Did he really just… leave like that?”
Her expression was so incredulous that Dennis couldn’t help but chuckle. He reached over and gave her cheek a gentle pinch, smiling as he said, “The Harris family heir has always been a bit of a free spirit. He does as he pleases. Since all of this was meant for you, you might as well keep it. Besides…”
