Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 1276

Jordan Smith jerked his head up, eyes blown wide with shock. The disbelief on his face twisted into something much darker. “What did you just say?”

Anger surged inside him, hot and wild. He couldn’t stop himself. His hand knocked over the water glass on his desk, sending water spilling everywhere, soaking the paperwork. He didn’t care. All his attention was locked on Nathan Gates, his gaze so intense it was almost frightening. “When did this happen?”

Nathan knew there was no point in hiding the truth now. He kept it simple. “It happened today. They got their marriage license at the registration office this morning. The families had lunch together afterward.”

The next moment, Jordan grabbed the nearest cup and threw it to the floor. The crash echoed in the office. The calm, confident mask he always wore was gone. He looked utterly lost.

He’d always thought Camila would come back to him, no matter what. Even when she was disappointed, he believed that if he just kept waiting, if he just tried hard enough, Camila and Lillian would return to him someday.

Now the news of her marriage hit him like a punch to the gut. Everything he’d been clinging to just shattered.

Jordan pressed a hand to his chest, his face drawn with pain. It felt like his heart had been ripped out of him. Not even when he’d first lost Camila had it hurt this much. This was different. This was what it felt like to lose her for good.

So this was what it meant to love someone you could never have.

He curled his fingers into the fabric of his shirt, as if gripping tighter could make the ache go away. But nothing helped. The light in his eyes faded. He slumped in his chair, drained and defeated.

Nathan saw it all but stayed quiet. There was nothing left to say. It was clear now. The moment Ms. Davis filed for divorce, Jordan had lost his chance.

Jordan sat in silence for a long time, barely moving. Eventually, as if just remembering Nathan was still standing there, he raised his hand and spoke, his voice low and tired. “You can go. I just need to be alone.”

“Yes, sir.”

Nathan didn’t hesitate. He turned and left the office, closing the door behind him.

Alone, Jordan felt completely empty. Memories of Camila filled his mind, memories of her laughter and the way she used to light up whenever he walked through the door.

Back then, she wanted to share everything with him. Every time he came home, she greeted him with enthusiasm and warmth.

And how did he treat her? He met her warmth with coldness. He shut her out.

Regret hit him hard. It was overwhelming, sharper than anything he’d ever felt. His eyes burned. He realized he’d let the most important person in his life slip away. He’d missed his chance, and now she was gone for good.

From now on, she belonged to someone else.

No one dared disturb Jordan in his misery. He stayed in the office late, drinking until he couldn’t remember anything. It was the only way to keep the memories at bay.
