“The cabinet. There’s some on the cabinet by the door.”
Because of Camila’s advice, Audrey kept medicine stashed all over the house.
Walter spun around and grabbed the bottle. Only two pills left. He hurried back and helped Audrey take them.
It took a while, but her breathing slowly steadied, color returning to her cheeks.
“Are you feeling better?”
Walter watched her closely, worry written all over his face.
“Yeah…” Audrey felt a little guilty under his gaze. “Sorry, did I scare you? Am I just a huge bother?”
She was honestly afraid her condition would end up driving him away someday.
Walter didn’t seem to pick up on her worries. He frowned. “Why are you talking about being a bother? Your condition isn’t stable. It’s a good thing you had medicine on hand.”
He hesitated, still looking anxious. “Are you sure you don’t need to go to the hospital?”
Audrey shook her head. “No, it’s fine. It’s an old problem. It rarely happens, and as long as I remember my meds, I’m usually okay. I’ve just been busy lately and forgot…”
When he realized it was just because she’d forgotten her medicine, Walter couldn’t help but scold her. “How can you forget something so important? Next time, you have to remember. And keep your medicine with you, always.”
He felt both relieved and a little shaken. If he hadn’t brought her home tonight, and she’d had an attack alone, who knows if she’d have gotten her pills in time.
His tone was serious, but Audrey didn’t mind.
She could feel his genuine concern, and it honestly made her a little happy.
She grinned at him. “Okay, I get it. So, are you heading home now?”
Walter didn’t move an inch.
He still wasn’t comfortable leaving her alone tonight. Sure, she had bodyguards, maids, even a doctor nearby, but the way she’d looked during her episode… it was burned into his mind.
He thought for a moment, then made up his mind. “I’m staying here tonight.”
Audrey looked surprised, blinking at him, then teased, “Wow, Walter, are you offering yourself up for me to keep as my secret lover?”
Walter actually laughed at that. He reached over and tapped her lightly on the head. “What are you even saying? I’m just worried about you.”
“No problem at all.”
Audrey darted into the master bedroom and came back with a set of pajamas, all bright and cheerful again, like nothing bad had happened earlier. Walter knew better, though. He didn’t want her pushing herself too hard.
He took the clothes from her and said, “I can handle the rest. You should get some rest. If you feel sick during the night, call me. Don’t just try to tough it out. Also, don’t lock your door. That way, if anything happens, I can check on you.”
“Okay, got it!”
Audrey listened to his careful instructions, her heart melting a little. She headed to her room, calling out, “Goodnight, Walter. If I need anything, I’ll let you know!”
“Goodnight.”
Audrey slipped into her room. After a quick wash-up, she crawled into bed and fell asleep almost instantly. Maybe it was the medicine, maybe just the exhaustion, but for once, she slept deep and peaceful, with no sign of discomfort.
In the next room, Walter couldn’t relax. He’d stayed because he was worried about Audrey, scared she might get sick again in the night.
He drifted off for a while, but woke up with a jolt, heart pounding from a nightmare where Audrey was gasping for air, trying to call for him, unable to make a sound. The image haunted him.
Unable to rest, he got up and asked a maid to check on her. Only after they assured him she was fine did he finally go back to bed.
