Iris didn’t say a word. She just sat there, looking annoyed.
Amy leaned over and gave her shoulder a reassuring pat, whispering, “Come on, stop sulking. Just wait and see how I put her in her place later.”
That finally got a hint of a smile out of Iris. She glanced at Amy and asked, “What are you planning?”
Amy grinned. “She’s always acting so sweet, like she wants everyone to like her. Let’s see how she handles being embarrassed in front of everyone. Bet she won’t look so lovable then.”
“Alright,” Iris said, her eyes lighting up with approval.
Across the room, Audrey was following Walter around as he gave her a quick tour. Not far away, Harden and the rest were gathered around a pool table, playing a few rounds.
When Walter and Audrey walked over, someone called out, “Hey Walter, Audrey, come play with us.”
Audrey hesitated, looking a little lost. “How do you play? I’ve never tried before,” she admitted honestly.
Iris and Amy exchanged a quick glance. Amy piped up, “It’s fine! Just watch us for a bit, you’ll pick it up. It’s super easy.”
She acted like she was going to help, but Audrey could see right through them. She knew when someone wasn’t being genuine.
Audrey was about to turn them down, but Amy didn’t give her the chance. Before she could say anything, Amy grabbed her arm and led her away.
Amy smiled at Walter and said, “Don’t worry, we’ve got her. Us girls will play together.”
Walter thought Audrey might feel more comfortable hanging out with the girls, so he just nodded. “Have fun. If you need anything, just call me.”
Audrey smiled. “Alright, you go play with Harden.”
Walter nodded and joined the guys at the pool table.
Audrey hung back with Iris and Amy, watching them play, but it quickly became obvious they had no intention of teaching her anything. They just kept playing, barely even acknowledging her.
Audrey wasn’t naïve. She knew exactly what they were doing. She watched for a moment, then pulled out her phone and started scrolling, looking completely unbothered.
Iris and Amy didn’t notice. They were too busy pretending Audrey didn’t exist.
Half an hour went by before Harden wandered over. “Hey Audrey, how’s it going? Ready to give it a shot?”
“Audrey, what happened?” he asked, his voice gentle.
Audrey could tell he wasn’t accusing her, so she told him the truth. “After Iris and Amy brought me over, they just played by themselves. They didn’t say a single word to me. No one explained the rules. If that’s how you teach someone to play pool, maybe I’m just too slow to understand.”
As soon as she finished, everyone turned to look at Iris and Amy.
Amy immediately protested, “That’s not true. We definitely talked to you. Ms. Williams, do you have something against us?”
Most of the others had known Iris a lot longer, and since Audrey was Walter’s guest, no one wanted to take sides.
They tried to smooth things over. “Maybe it’s just a misunderstanding.”
“Yeah, Iris and Amy wouldn’t do that.”
“They probably just haven’t taught anyone before. It’s not a big deal.”
“It’s all good, Audrey. If you want to learn, we’ll show you.”
