Sarah Brown had pretty much run out of options.
If she didn’t help her brother figure out his love life first, she just knew she’d never get to properly date Larry Adams. Her brother, Billy Brown, was the jealous type. If he couldn’t find happiness, he sure wasn’t about to let her have any, either. Who knew what would set him off next? He might just snap one day and break her and Larry up for no good reason.
For the sake of her own happiness, Sarah decided to quit sitting back and watching the drama unfold. She got serious and started giving her brother some actual advice.
She wasn’t sure if Billy was really listening. He didn’t say anything back, though, and for once looked like he was actually thinking about what she’d said.
After a long pause, he glanced over at her again. His voice wasn’t nearly as gruff this time. “Since you were actually useful tonight, I’ll let you off the hook.”
And with that, he left her standing there and disappeared into his study.
Sarah rolled her eyes behind his back, then quickly escaped to her room. She grabbed her phone and immediately sent Larry a string of texts, venting about how ridiculous her brother was acting.
After she got it out of her system, she switched to a softer tone, full of concern for Larry. “Does your lip still hurt? It’s all Billy’s fault. He scared me so bad earlier that I didn’t even get a good look. Is it swollen? Check the fridge for ice and put some on it.”
Her fussing made Larry grin. Any pain in his lip was already gone. He reassured her, “I’m fine. It’s just a tiny cut. The only problem is… I might not be able to show my face at The Smith Group tomorrow.”
The cut was right on his lip. No matter how you looked at it, it was the kind of injury that made people think things.
Anyone who saw it would know exactly what had happened.
Sarah wasn’t embarrassed at all. She shot back, “So what? Let people know you and your girlfriend are crazy about each other. That’s a good thing, isn’t it?”
Then, as if struck by inspiration, she declared, “Whenever the mark fades, I’ll just give you a new one. Next time, I’m going for your neck. If people see that, they won’t dare try anything with you again.”
Sarah knew all too well that ever since Larry took charge, girls had been lining up for a chance with him. Even clients at The Smith Group tried to set him up with their daughters, nieces, any girl who seemed like a good match. Suddenly, Sarah had a ton of rivals.
The last time she’d gone to The Adams Group to see Larry, she’d witnessed a whole crowd of rich girls and socialites get turned away at the front desk. Not a single one of them had an appointment. Every single one was hoping to cozy up to Larry.
Sarah had been so annoyed. She remembered back when all those women wanted nothing to do with Larry. In public, they either mocked him or avoided him completely. Now that he was doing well, they couldn’t wait to throw themselves at him. It was so fake, it made her sick.
