Dennis knew this was going to take time. Once he calmed down, he went right back to Camila’s side.
Camila was out cold, sleeping so deeply she didn’t notice a thing. It wasn’t until dawn on the third day that her fever finally started to break. When she opened her eyes, her whole body felt heavy and sore, the kind of tired that only comes after being really sick.
She barely managed a frown before she realized someone was sitting next to her. She turned her head and saw Dennis, his eyes red and his usually handsome face looking completely worn out, like he hadn’t slept in days.
Looking around, she quickly figured out she was in the medical room at the research institute. Suddenly, she understood everything, and the look in her eyes softened with worry for him.
“Dennis, I’m awake.”
Just those few words hit him hard. He rushed forward and wrapped her up in a hug, holding on so tight but staying silent. Camila could feel the storm of emotions in his arms, and her nose stung with tears she refused to let fall. She reached up and gently patted his back, her voice barely above a whisper.
“Did I scare you? Or… is there something wrong with me again?”
Dennis didn’t seem to want to answer that last part. His voice was low and steady. “You’re going to be okay.”
Camila gave him a tired but genuine smile, following his lead. “Yeah, I’ll be fine. So you shouldn’t be so stressed.”
Right after she said it, her stomach let out a loud growl. She laughed first, then patted Dennis on the shoulder. “Is there anything to eat? I’m starving.”
She had no clue how long she’d been asleep, but the look on Dennis’s face told her it had to be at least a day, maybe more.
Inside, she felt a wave of frustration. If she hadn’t lost her memories, she could be helping with the research. At least then she’d be doing something useful instead of lying here helpless.
Maybe Kyle picked up on her mood, because he said softly, “You have to trust us, Camila. We’re going to do everything we can to help you.”
“I know,” she replied, her voice warm. “Thank you, both of you, for everything.”
Kyle and Jarvis decided not to bother her any longer and quietly left the room. As soon as they were gone, Camila hugged Dennis and whispered, “Dennis, I’m going to be okay. I still want to spend forever with you.”
She couldn’t bear the thought of leaving him. For him, and for Lillian, she was determined to keep fighting. Dennis hugged her back, saying nothing, but the way he held her spoke louder than any words, like he wanted to keep her as close as humanly possible.
