Camila was done with him. She didn’t bother hiding her frustration as she repeated herself for the last time. “Jordan Smith, I don’t ever want to see you again. It’s not that I’m holding onto the past. Honestly, I’m just disgusted. From now on, unless it’s something truly important, please stay away from me and stop interfering in our lives. The moment your family took Lillian, whatever agreement we had was over. You have no reason to come near us anymore.”
With those words, she looked away from Jordan and turned to Dennis. Her whole demeanor softened, the coldness vanishing as she smiled up at him. “Dennis, let’s go.”
Dennis’s eyes were gentle as he nodded. “Okay.”
He opened the car door for her, and soon they were gone, the car pulling away while Jordan was left standing there, helpless. For once, he didn’t even try to stop them. He just stared after the car, looking like someone who had finally lost everything. Nathan Gates watched quietly. He could tell how much Mr. Smith was hurting, but there was nothing to say. Nathan had seen this coming a long time ago, and he was pretty sure his boss had too. Maybe now he would finally let go.
Camila didn’t spare another thought for Jordan. In the car, all her attention was on Dennis.
He glanced over at her, his eyes full of warmth and a small, teasing smile on his lips. “So… did you mean what you said back there, Camila?”
She blinked, pretending not to understand. “Mean what?”
Dennis gave her a look, half amused, half expectant. “You know exactly what.”
Her last marriage had made her wary, but Dennis—his kindness, his patience, his understanding—he’d helped her find her courage again. With him, the idea of marriage wasn’t scary at all. She actually looked forward to it. She couldn’t wait to build a real home with him.
Hearing her promise, Dennis felt his heart melt. He pulled her into his arms, pressing a gentle kiss to her lips. His voice was low and a little rough with emotion. “Good. I want you to remember what you said. No matter what happens, whether you remember this or not, I’m holding you to that. You promised.”
Camila paused for a moment, then looked up at him with a playful smile. “Oh? So, does this mean we’re actually going to look at churches now? And wedding rings?”
