By the time Jordan Smith finished talking, there was no hiding the emotion in his voice.
If he and Camila had never been married, he might have told himself their love was never real. He could have convinced himself there was still a chance to win her back, to make her fall for him again. But if Camila actually married Dennis Williams, he couldn’t pretend anymore. That would be it. No more chances. She’d be out of his life, forever.
Jordan had never felt this panicked before. He didn’t care that Camila and Dennis had made their feelings clear. He stepped right in front of them, blocking their way without even thinking.
“Camila, I messed up. Please, come back with me,” he said, his voice almost shaking. “We can try again… get remarried, give Lillian a real family. I’ll be better this time. A good husband, a good dad. You’ll be the most important thing in my life, I swear. Dennis only got close because we were having problems. That’s the only reason you started to drift. Marriage is a huge decision, Camila. Please don’t rush into it.”
He couldn’t just stand by and watch them get married.
Dennis Williams had already lost his patience. The second Jordan reached for Camila, Dennis pulled her close, wrapping his arm around her. Jordan’s hand just hung there, empty. He looked at Camila, desperate. “Camila…”
He never got to finish. Camila’s face twisted with pure disgust.
“Can you not call me that?” she said, her tone cold.
Jordan froze, thrown off by the look she gave him.
Looking Jordan straight in the eye, she spoke in a calm, steady voice. “You’re right about one thing. Marriage is serious. It shouldn’t be impulsive. But as long as I’m with Dennis, I don’t care if it is. I’m not afraid of losing, because he’ll never let that happen. He’s not like you, so stop thinking everyone’s as small-minded as you are. No one knows better than you why our marriage fell apart. Stop lying to yourself.”
She paused, her voice suddenly sharp. “And honestly, I’m not moving that fast. I could never outpace you, Mr. Smith. No one could, right?”
Jordan’s face fell. Her words brought back memories of his engagement party with Sandra Taylor. He’d rushed into that engagement right after divorcing Camila. If he hadn’t figured out who Sandra really was, he’d probably never have woken up. He never would have tried to get Camila back.
Thinking about how everything had started made his expression grow even darker.
