“But she still hasn’t said that she has forgiven me! Big Brother Nolan, it was my fault. I was blinded by my own selfishness and hurt her badly.
“I’ve always assumed that the reason for wanting to return in the last few months was to explain myself to her and to avoid any regrets. And I also wanted to see Brother Xavier again.
“But now, I realize that I have been wrong, so, so wrong. I don’t care how Brother Xavier is at all and I don’t care whether I have explained myself properly.
“What I care about is whether she still recognizes me as her younger sister; whether she cares for me; whether she can forgive me! Do you understand, Big Brother Nolan?
“I tried to be calm and detached as if I don’t care, but in reality, I’m the only one who knows that I care, I really do!
“I care about the fact she hates me. I care about how she personally gave me another chance in life twenty-six years ago, even though she hated me so much.
“Most of all, I care about whether I’ll be able to seek her forgiveness in this joke of a life.
“It’s only in the face of death that one understands what matters most. I beg you, Big Brother Nolan. Please take me to her once more, alright?”
Spencer looked at her sternly.
Emilia’s words sounded sincere and touching.
Yet, when he listened to her, her words were like sharp needles that pierced his heart mercilessly.
He bent down and grabbed both armrests of the chair she was sitting on. Then, he stared at her intently.
“You said that it’s only in the face of death that one understands what matters most. To you, no matter what happens, the most important person is your sister who isn’t even related to you.
“Even in the face of death, you still think of her and miss her. You pine for her forgiveness and willingness to accept you again! And what about me? Who am I to you?”
Spencer laughed sardonically as he placed a hand on his chest. Despite the wide grin on his face, his eyes were filled with tears.
“Touch my heart! It’s full of you. Twenty-six years, Emmy. I’ve been by your side for twenty-six years, and how do you treat me?
“Do you really believe that the love between you and your sister is the only true love, but the love shown to you by a bystander is so insignificant that he spends twenty-six years in exchange for an unimportant role? Is this true?”
Emilia was shocked.
She sat still and regarded the disheveled man in front of her who was on the verge of losing his mind. She behaved as if it was her first time coming across this question.
“Big Brother Nolan, I…”
“Enough!”
The man interrupted her at once, refusing to listen to her.
He stood up and cast her a disappointed look. He shook his head and backed away.
“Now, I’ve finally understood that I’ve been so foolish! I’ve always believed that people’s hearts could be changed, whether it takes a day, a year, or even a decade. No matter how icy that person is, I’m sure her heart will be softened after twenty years.
“But I was wrong. Some hearts can never be softened. She can see everyone in this world, but she’ll never notice the one closest to her.
“Emilia, is it true that you have never loved me? Despite the years we’ve spent together, you have never cared for me, haven’t you?”
“I…”
Emilia wanted to answer him but she was cut off again.
“Hmph! Never mind, it’s no longer important. After all, I’m the biggest fool in this game! Yes, I am!”
After that, he turned around and strode away.
Emilia watched his silhouette as he left. A moment passed before she regained her composure and she curled up her fingers tightly.
‘Big Brother Nolan, you’re wrong.’
‘You’re so wrong.’
‘You’ve always been important to me!’
“Yes.”
The bodyguard agreed and left with the soup.
Once the door was shut quietly, Natalie gave Emilia a proper look and asked, “Tell me, why are you here? Just speak your mind, less you have to make another trip here.”
She was leaning against the glazed countertop which she had just used to prepare food. She was not keen on inviting Emilia to sit down in the living room.
Feeling embarrassed, Emilia lowered her head and bit her lip.
Yet, she had been keeping her frustrations to herself for a very long time. She feared that she would go insane.
Hence, after a moment’s silence, she lifted her head again and fixed an alert gaze on Natalie. She said, “Sister, I don’t have much time left.”
Natalie raised her eyebrows.
There was a jeering look on her face.
“What does it have to do with me whether you live or die? You should be minding your own business if you don’t have much time left, instead of coming here frequently… Are you trying to gain something from me?”
Her heartless remark was like a stab through Emilia’s heart.
It was a rude awakening to Emilia as the color slowly faded from her face.
She looked at Natalie and whimpered, “Sis, I’m not trying to gain anything from you. I just…”
“If you aren’t trying to gain anything, leave! I don’t want to see you again.”
Natalie interrupted her. Then, she turned around and headed for the door.
Emilia panicked.
She wanted to reach out and grab her arm but dared not do so.
