After the phone call, Joel headed back to the ward. He watched through the window as he saw his mother adjusting the blanket for his father.
Concern and worry were etched on her face, making her a wholly different person from her usual, feisty self.
He stood there for a while without entering the ward and his lips instinctively curled into a smile.
In fact, that was how his mother was.
Her bark was worse than her bite. She often complained about Dad and whined about how incompetent he was.
Yet in reality, when something happened to Dad, she was the one who was the most concerned about him.
This was probably the greatest and purest love in the world.
As he pondered, he thought of Emilia again.
The others might not have noticed her reaction, but he saw it.
When Emilia saw Dad, there was an obvious shift in her gaze.
Then, Joel recalled how Dad kept Emilia’s photo hidden within the pages of his book. He must be afraid that his wife would find out about it.
What was their actual relationship? Why did Mom dislike Emilia so much?
Besides, what sort of feelings did Emilia harbor towards Dad?
Joel felt that he could take a chance and find out.
Thus, he stepped into the ward and grinned. “Mom, I spoke to Brother and he’ll come over after work.”
Natalie nodded.
She had two sons who were polar opposites of each other in terms of their personalities and attitude towards work.
Her eldest son was mature whereas her youngest was somewhat unreliable, so she felt relieved about letting John take care of the company.
Thinking about that, she lifted her head to glance at Joel.
“No point standing around. Carry on with your work, I’ll call you when Dad wakes up.”
However, Joel did not leave and instead, he got a stool and sat down beside her.
“Mom, that’s a bit unaffectionate of you. When Dad was still in danger, you forbade me from leaving; now that he’s fine, you already have your pillar of support so you get rid of me. I’m not gonna do that.”
Natalie was perfectly aware of Joel’s rants and jokes.
As Xavier was safe now, she had the mood to play along.
Hence, she regarded him with an amused expression. “Eh, you weren’t so affectionate with me when the daughter-in-law was around. Since when have you learned to be two-faced?”
Joel was caught off guard.
However, something from Natalie’s remark caught his attention.
His face radiated with glee and he exclaimed, “Mom, do you recognize her as your daughter-in-law?”
Natalie’s expression hardened.
It was just a casual remark.
She had no intention of recognizing Lucy.
After all, she still had not let go of her bias towards the entertainment industry as a result of Emilia. Besides, she did not fancy Lucy’s stubborn personality.
Therefore, if possible, she wished that Joel and Lucy would divorce.
Joel was immature, so she always believed that he needed someone who was tender and reasonable to be there for him.
By doing so, he would have someone to accompany and take care of him.
Yet, as she stared into her son’s bright and eager gaze, she failed to utter those words of rejection that was somehow stuck in her throat.
In the end, she scoffed and returned a scowl.
However, he never expected the truth to be so complicated and harsh.
He suddenly fell silent. Natalie glanced at him and said wanly, “You don’t have to feel this way. The hatred and conflict experienced by the past generation have nothing to do with you.”
Joel forced a smile.
“If you truly mean what you say, that’s great. Then again, why did you get angry when you realize Lucy didn’t tell you that she knew Emilia? It shows that you’re still offended by it.”
Natalie was stunned.
Soon, she snorted uncomfortably.
“She is she and you are you. Both of you aren’t the same.”
Joel understood that his mother’s beliefs and opinions were already set in stone. It would take some time for her to change her mindset.
Thus, he did not press on. At 6:00 pm, when Xavier awoke and John arrived, Joel left some instructions for his brother and took off.
The following noon, the cause of the accident was revealed.
The man sent by John had gotten hold of the CCTV footage at the scene of the accident.
The footage showed that the truck sped out from an adjoining road and lost control, which as a result, crashed into Xavier’s seat.
As the truck driver suffered serious injuries in the crash and passed away, he could not be taken in for questioning.
Still, the footage clearly showed how disorientated the truck driver seemed moments before he collided with Xavier’s car.
Xavier applied for a post-mortem of the truck driver’s body with the relevant authorities. At the same time, he sent someone to investigate the driver’s connections and his financial status.
The investigation went on smoothly. No matter if it were the officers at the bank or the local police station, they were all very cooperative.
Therefore, three days later, John received all of the information he required.
Instead of going through it on his own, he brought it along to the hospital and read it with Xavier.
