Lucy Katz was immediately filled with hope. She grabbed Joel Foster’s arm and kept begging him to save her.
She was grabbing onto a lifeline and did not want to let go of the only hope of living on.
Joel frowned. His cold eyes swept over the group of people and pulled her over.
“It’s alright. Everything’s okay. I’m here now.”
Joel took off his coat, draped it across Lucy, and kept consoling her.
Before this, Lucy’s clothes were torn apart by these men.
She kept holding onto the piece of clothing in front of her chest so even if she looked awful, at least she protected her dignity.
The group of people were stunned by the sudden commotion. They did not recognize Joel Foster so they treated him like a person who had entered the wrong room.
The group of them viciously said, “Hey man, it’s none of your business. I advise you to leave immediately.”
While he spoke, he pointed his finger at Joel.
The finger was midair and there was a loud cry.
“Ah!”
Two bodyguards came out of nowhere behind Joel. The man’s arm was quickly twisted behind his back and he was pinned on the side of the table.
The rest of them were shocked by the turn of events, took a step back, and gaped at Joel.
“You...Who are you?”
Joel stared at them coldly and did not bother to answer.
He carried Lucy in his arms and said in an icy voice, “I’ll give you 2 options. You can either kneel and apologize to her, or...I’ll break whichever hand of yours that touched her today.”
After he finished his sentence, the bodyguard that was pinning the man on the table moved his wrist slightly and a loud cry could be heard instantly, as if a pig was being slaughtered.
The group was terrified. They looked like a bunch of gangsters, but they were just a few hooligans with nothing better to do.
They normally relied on extorting others for a living. It became their instinct to bully the weak and fear the powerful.
It was easy to bully someone like Lucy Katz. If they met a stronger party, they would have retreated.
Even if they did not recognize Joel Foster, from the looks of his two bodyguards, he was not someone they should mess with.
Moreover, with Joel’s elitist aura, one knew that he was not a regular person.
They just wanted money. Lucy Katz was a public figure with no background. She was from a poor family so even if something happened, she would not dare to say anything.
Joel was different.
Hence, these people shrunk to the back.
Lucy’s stepfather saw this and panicked.
He finally had this opportunity, so he could not just let it go. Otherwise, it would not be so easy to trick Lucy the next time.
Lucy’s stepfather quickly said, “Don’t listen to him! They only have 3 people and there’s so many of us. If we really got into a fight, we might still win. You can’t scare us with just a few words!”
As he said this, he turned to Lucy and added, “F*ck! Anyhow, I’m your father. Is this how you treat me? Uniting with strangers? Get over here!”
Lucy glared at him, her eyes burned with rage.
Joel was stunned by his words.
He subconsciously looked down at the woman in his arms and asked, “What did he say? He’s your dad?”
Even though Officer Katz left the community early, Joel did not recall that he looked like this.
Moreover, Officer Katz was a military officer, so he was well-groomed and was an upright person. He would never do such despicable things.
What was going on?
Lucy’s face darkened and explained, “He’s my stepfather.”
Her voice was low but he heard it clearly.
Joel could not help but feel shocked.
Joel heard this and directed his gaze from the window towards her.
His handsome face did not show any expression, but Lucy could tell that his heart ached for her and he was blaming himself.
Her heart trembled.
“When did this happen?”
Joel asked, his voice was low.
“Huh?”
Lucy did not fully understand his question and let out a curious sound.
Joel had to ask another question.
“When did Uncle Katz pass away?”
Lucy was startled.
She recalled that she never told him about her father’s death. Joel was also not someone that would pry into her past.
Lucy was somewhat puzzled and countered, “How did you know that my dad passed away?”
He did not know if he was self-deprecating or mocking her, he curled up his lips slightly.
“If Uncle Katz was still around, he would’ve never let anyone bully you.”
Lucy was dumbfounded.
Sometimes it was like this, just a simple reason. She did not usually pay any attention to it nor did she think too much about it.
It was these casual moments that her counterpart noticed and brought it up, which touched her most fragile nerve.
Lucy reluctantly smiled and replied, “When I was about 10 years old.”
Joel frowned.
