Nell glanced at Joel and mumbled, “I can buy whatever I like on my own.”
She was no longer the same person as before. With Xinghui and her acting career, she made quite a sum of money for herself.
Although her financial status was incomparable to that of a nouveau riche like Gideon, she could still afford to buy something that she liked.
Gideon curled his lips slightly. “Mm, you can buy anything you like.”
His remark caught Nell by surprise. When she turned to look at him, she noticed the hint of a smile on his face, and then she remembered that all of his cards, property deeds and shares belonged to her.
This meant that she was in possession of the man’s entire wealth. If he wanted to buy something for her, he had to get money from her.
Her cheeks began to feel warm and her heart started beating rapidly out of joy and excitement.
Joel was oblivious to their private matters as he stared at them with widened eyes.
“Second Elder Brother, don’t be so stingy! Aren’t you going to get a gift for Sis-in-law?”
He darted his gaze and eyed Nell with a grin. “Sis-in-law, how about this? You introduce me to a female friend and I’ll buy you whatever you like.”
Nell rolled her eyes and scoffed, “I’m not that unethical. I won’t harm another girl and send her into a flaming pit.”
Joel was furious. “Since when did I become a flaming pit? Don’t you know that so many girls in this country want to marry me?”
Nell chuckled. “Tell me again once you have shaken off the title of Don Juan. If that’s the case, I’ll be impressed.”
Joel was peeved.
At the same time, an auctioned item caught her attention.
It was a white jade hairpin that shimmered brilliantly. It was said that the hairpin was a dowry that belonged to Madam Prosperità a thousand years ago, and it symbolized luck and prosperity.
The hairpin was also known as the hairpin of Luck and Prosperity.
Nell was not particularly attracted to vintage trinkets, but for some reason, the hairpin had caught her eye.
The starting price was three hundred thousand.
It was just an accessory. With the exception of its intricate design, Madam Prosperità was not a famous figure, so the item’s starting price was not high.
Gideon had been observing Nell’s expression closely. He noticed that she was staring at the hairpin intently and he asked, “Do you like it?”
Nell nodded.
The man called out a bid.
“The Hairpin of Luck and Prosperity, no. 32, 1 million!”
Nell was astonished. Nobody else had yet bid for the hairpin that cost three hundred thousand, but he had called out a million.
She tugged at the man’s sleeve and tried to signal him to be less aggressive.
Gideon lowered her head and smiled at her, whispering, “Others will follow suit.”
Indeed, somebody in the first row called out, “No. 16, 1.1 million!”
“No. 32, 2 million!”
“No. 16, 2.1 million!”
“No. 32, 3 million!”
“No. 16, 3.1 million!”
“No. 32, 4 million!”
“No. 16, 4.1 million!”
“No. 32, 5 million!”
“No. 16, 5.1 million!”
Nell stopped her husband when she realized that he was about to increase his bid.
Just now, she noticed that the person who had bid for the same item was also a woman.
Since somebody else liked it, fine! There was no need to spend 5 million on a hairpin. She knew Gideon was rich, but he should not spend his money like this.
She whispered to him, “Forget it, let her have it!”
She stood up and asked, “Could you give me a moment to discuss with that gentleman?”
The auctioneer eyed her and then Gideon in the second row. Finally, he nodded.
“Alright, we’ll have a five-minute break.”
The woman turned around and walked towards Gideon.
When she turned around, Nell had a clear view of her face.
She realized how attractive and fine-featured the woman was.
The woman was dressed in a dark red gown; she was discreet yet elegant. She possessed sharp features and a curvaceous figure. With a smile on her face, she sashayed towards them.
“Hi, I’m Joanne Nolan, the daughter of Country T’s General Nolan. A pleasure to meet you.”
Gideon regarded her.
“Anything?”
Joanne was slightly surprised. She did not expect him to be so cold.
After all, she was confident about her own appearance. Although this man was handsome and seemed to come from an affluent background, she felt that she was courteous enough and should not be treated in such a manner.
Still, she did not mind. She smiled and said, “Sir, I like this jade hairpin. Would you be kind enough to let me have it?”
Gideon replied emotionlessly, “Sorry, in an auction, the highest bidder gets the item. Most importantly… My wife likes it too.”
Then, he held Nell’s hand.
Joanne seemed to notice Nell at this moment and regarded her from top to toe.
Her first reaction was awe.
No doubt, the young woman in front of her was very pretty.
She wore a light purple gown and had a charming face. She looked both demure, sexy, and was a real stunner.
She chuckled. “This lady looks rather young. The jade hairpin won’t be a good fit for her, will it?”
