The phone’s loudspeaker was on, so Nell overheard Joel’s words.
In fact, she was always fascinated by the Bauhinia Consortium, but she never had the chance to meet them. Now, after listening to it, she wanted to attend their auction.
Most importantly, she knew that the Bauhinia Consortium’s emblem was a lifelike bauhinia. She wondered whether they were related to Old K’s death.
She looked pleadingly at Gideon, who agreed to bring her along.
The following night, the auction took place at the International Hall.
As it was a formal event, Nell wore a dark gown and had her hair styled. She looked as ethereal as a goddess.
On the other hand, Gideon donned a white tuxedo. His haircut was neat and crisp that complemented his impeccably ironed outfit. In contrast to Joel’s fresh-faced appearance, Gideon emanated a cool and immaculate vibe, giving the impression that he was to be honored and not to be offended.
Nell held onto his arm and they arrived at the International Hall punctually.
Security at the venue was tight and only those with invitation cards were permitted entrance.
Without a doubt, members of the Four Great Clans bore such privilege, and Gideon was no exception. After going through security, a spacious exhibition hall came into view and there were already a lot of people gathered inside. Elites from China and the rest of the world attended this prestigious event.
Nell was in awe as she observed the faces which she normally saw on the international news.
She was even more intrigued by the Bauhinia Clan.
It was still early and the auction had not begun.
So, the three of them found a spot to settle down.
Finally, Nell could not suppress her curiosity anymore and asked, “Who are the Bauhinia Clan? How did they manage to invite so many big shots from all over the world?”
Joel chuckled. “Ha, you have no idea, haven’t you? Have you heard of the Shelby Clan?”
Nell was surprised. “Isn’t that the surname of a previous dynasty’s royalty?”
“Yes, it is.”
Nell sat still in shock.
Gideon caressed her hair and explained, “The Bauhinia Clan is the descendent of the Shelby Clan. After the fall of the previous dynasty, members of the Shelby Clan were scattered all over the globe and they later formed the Bauhinia Consortium, which is also the modern Bauhinia Clan.”
Nell was skeptical. “But didn’t the books mention that all members of the Shelby Clan died in the Imperial City when the dynasty fell?”
China’s modern history was made up of bloody battles. In the previous dynasty, the nation became very weak and it allowed foreign invaders to attack the country which led to the dynasty’s downfall. According to the history books, all members of royalty had perished.
Following that, war consumed the nation for half a century. Factions were formed and territories were split, resulting in the division of China.
Until one day, a hero was born. Together with his comrades, he ended the war and built this prosperous and peaceful nation.
Come to think of it, although it had only been a few decades since the nation was established, the war had brought turmoil to the country for half a century. Thus, more than a hundred years had passed since the reign of the last dynasty.
Gideon added, “The history books aren’t always accurate. In fact, at the end of the previous dynasty, the rulers of that time had already sensed the impending danger that would strike the nation.
“They did think of ways to revolutionize the country, but their downfall was imminent and there was little they could do to salvage the situation. Hence, they sent a team to take the young emperor and large amounts of national artifacts away.
“The team was set up in secret, so hardly anyone knew about it. It was a little later that the rulers of that time announced the sudden death of the young emperor.
Joel gritted his teeth. “Second Elder Brother, make sure your woman behaves herself. She’s pissing me off!”
Gideon smiled and placed a large palm on Nell’s head. He rubbed it gently and commented, “Beautifully put.”
Joel was speechless.
Argh! Why did he have to invite these two?
Did he have a loose screw, trying to torture himself?
Noticing how mad he was, Nell stopped teasing him. They waited patiently for the auction to commence.
As there were many international celebrities here, the seats in the hall had been assigned according to their statuses.
Nell and her companions were assigned to the second row. After everybody was seated, the auction soon began.
An assortment of precious treasure pieces was displayed, including relics, antiques, and various gemstones.
Nell was bewildered by the range of treasured pieces. Of course, the starting prices of those pieces were equally astonishing.
Nevertheless, the auctioned items were priceless artifacts. She heard that the auction was held every four years as most of these artifacts were brought out of the Chinese palace last time.
Although the Shelby Clan belonged to the previous dynasty, today, the Bauhinia Clan was still emotionally attached to China, as proven by the location of the auctions that were always held in the country.
Nell was absorbed by the displays when Joel moved closer to her and said, “Sis-in-law, some personal prized possessions will be auctioned after this. If anything tickles your fancy, you can get Second Elder Brother to buy it for you.”
