Unfortunately, things did not always work out the way one wanted.
Some relationships became estranged over time.
After exchanging greetings with Old Madam Jones, Nell said nothing further and began to leave.
At the same time, the middle-aged man seated opposite them spoke.
“Are you Ms. Nell Jennings?”
Nell was surprised and turned around.
There was a warm and tranquil smile on the man’s face. It was the type of smile a person of power directed graciously towards his subjects.
She nodded. “Yes.”
“I’ve seen your performance and your acting is outstanding. I heard that you sang the show’s theme song as well? I particularly adore that song. Would you sing for me tonight, please?”
Nell felt skeptical.
‘Cannon Fodder Guide' was a web-series produced on a small budget. In order to reduce spending, Tim Coombs did not hire a professional singer.
Once, he found out by chance that Nell could sing, so he let her handle the show’s opening theme.
She did not expect the middle-aged man to listen to it.
Nell was a bit shy and twirled her hair beside her ear.
“Um… I don’t think it’s a good idea, you’re having a gathering here…”
“It’s alright, it’s just that this song sounds similar to a musical piece composed by my old friend. When I heard it, it moved me. Now that you’re here, I wish to listen to it once more in person. Honestly, I’m the one who behaved too abruptly.”
He said gently with a grin.
In fact, as a total stranger, his request was certainly too abrupt.
Nevertheless, this man carried a courteous and hospitable aura with him. Moreover, his tone was sincere, which made her believe that he simply wanted to listen to the song instead of using her as a form of entertainment.
Nell was not a calculative person. She could see that this man was no ordinary Joe.
Besides, he seemed genuine and down-to-earth. The song must have some special meaning to him.
At any rate, she did not want to continue socializing with the rest of the attendees. It was not like she could not sing a song.
As she pondered, she stole a glance at Old Madam Jones.
Old Madam Jones gestured at her with a nod.
Nell pursed her lips. At last, she answered, “Ok.”
The private room was furnished with modern sound systems. It might not be as sophisticated as the ones used in recording studios, but the equipment found at Xianshui Pavilion was no doubt superb in terms of quality.
Nell let someone pick the song for her. Then, she picked up the microphone and began to sing.
Actually, whenever she sang this song, she would immerse herself in it, and this time was no different.
When the first note arrived, Nell threw herself wholeheartedly into the world of music.
It was said that the song was written by a well-known composer. He wrote about a woman he once loved who died unexpectedly in an accident. He missed her very much and wished that both of them would reunite in the afterlife.
Although the song depicted love and loss, the entire composition was not overwhelmed with sorrow. Still, it was tinged with a hint of mourning. It could be said the song was a good example of what it felt like to be sad, yet, one did not let the sadness consume him.
Nell projected her emotions into the song. Meanwhile, the middle-aged man was stunned when she first opened her mouth to sing.
His expression shifted from warmth and friendliness to one of disbelief and great amazement.
Listening to the song live was ultimately different from listening to it on television.
He was still in awe of her performance on television, but he would soon return to his senses and knew that Nell was not standing in front of him.
The Jennings family used to be led by Sylvia, Celine and her mother. You sucked up to Sylvia and appeased Celine, all because you wanted to incorporate the Jennings into the Mortons.
Now, Sylvia is in trouble and is of no use to you, while Celine and Sally have a lawsuit on their hands. You’re afraid of bringing problems to yourself or the Mortons, so you decided to push Celine away and look for me instead. Jason, do you think everybody else is as retarded as her? To let you toy with and lie to?”
Jason was upset.
“What are you getting at? Am I that sort of person to you? I admit that my relationship with Celine is on the rocks now, but it was already bad before she got into trouble. I’m not trying to take advantage of her situation now and harm others!”
Nell was so irked by his response that she laughed.
“Not taking advantage of her situation? Not harming others? Jason Morton, do you even believe your own words?! Let me tell you something. If you could still support Celine at this rate, I would have had some ounce of respect for you. But did you do it? No!
“Simply put, you only care about yourself, and the only person you love is yourself. So, don’t play pretend in front of me. Your act disgusts me.
“Also, since you have chosen Celine, you should man up and take responsibility, or else I would hate you and disrespect you even further!”
Once she had finished speaking, she turned around and stormed off.
Little did Jason expect that she would accuse him in such a hostile manner.
Anger shrouded his expression.
Finally, he could not suppress his rage and cried, “Nell Jennings! You’ll regret what you said to me on this day!”
Nell did not look back.
This drove Jason mad.
He shifted his gaze and strode towards her without warning. He grabbed her arm and said in a deep voice, “Wait, I have a secret. Will you listen to me?”
Nell regarded him and displayed a sardonic smile. “I won’t listen to you, even if you have a hundred secrets! Let me go!”
“I mean it! What should I do to make you believe me? Yes, I admit that I’ve made a lot of mistakes in the past and did a lot of bad things. Perhaps, I have hurt you, but at least, I sincerely want to apologize to you now. Why won’t you give me another chance?”
