Perhaps… He never came in at all?
Nell tugged at her hair and rubbed her face.
The images of her dream faded away as her mind woke up, but her temples throbbed with the start of a headache.
She pressed her fingertips to her forehead and gently rubbed a few times before lifting the blanket and getting out of bed.
“Missus, you’re awake!”
Aunt Joyce just happened to come in and smiled at her.
Nell forced a smile. “I overslept. Why didn’t you wake me?”
“Sir said that you weren’t feeling well before he left, so he told us not to disturb you so you could rest longer.”
Nell was surprised.
She looked at Aunt Joyce who was all smiles, and asked, “Where did he sleep last night?”
“You didn’t know? He stayed up too late working last night and slept in the study itself.”
Nell was silent for a moment.
So he really did not come back.
An indescribably complicated feeling rose up in her heart. She did not know what was going on either.
She had clearly planned to guard her heart from the beginning, so she would not get stuck no matter the purpose and final outcome of this marriage.
However… Why did she feel lost?
Nell did not look well, and Aunt Joyce asked carefully after scanning her appearance. “Missus, would you like some breakfast?”
Nell came back to her senses and shook her head.
“It’s fine. I’ll go straight to the company.”
Perhaps because Gideon had sent Matthew in advance to notify, but the people in the company were not surprised even though Nell was late. It was as if they already knew about it.
When she arrived at the company, she handled her work as usual.
Throughout the day, Gideon did not send a single message or called her.
Nell tried her best to suppress the strange feeling in the heart. She knew that she could not ask for too much.
Their marriage had never been a union of love. Whether he had a girlfriend or not, or even whether he had children or not, in the end, it had nothing to do with her.
Therefore, she did not have to be upset or ask questions.
Yes. That was right.
Even though she was moved by him because of that incident, it was only a little.
Perhaps it was thanks to that that the heavens wanted to show her what she did not know in advance, to remind her of the truth.
Nell closed her eyes and scratched her head in vexation.
At that moment, her phone suddenly rang.
She frowned and picked it up. However, her expression immediately shifted when she saw the caller ID.
“Old K?”
“It’s me.”
The voice on the other end was hoarse and low. “I’ve gotten a rough sketch of what you asked me to look into for you, but it’s not convenient to say on the phone. When are you free? We’ll talk face to face!”
Nell’s breathing tightened abruptly.
The fingers holding the phone turned white from her grip. It took awhile for her to calm down.
“Alright. Send me the address and I’ll come meet you this afternoon.”
“Got it.”
In the afternoon, Nell left work early and went to the agreed cafe.
The one called Old K was a bald middle-aged man wearing sunglasses. He had arrived early and was sitting at a seat by the window.
Upon seeing Nell, he nodded at her.
Nell walked over and sat down across from him.
“How was it? What did you find?”
She was a little anxious and went straight to the point as soon as she settled into her seat.
Nell smiled coldly.
Justice?
So what if they could not use justice?
As long as it was proven that her mother was indeed murdered and not killed in an accident, Nell would find a way to get that pair of mother and daughter to tell the truth by themselves.
Her eyes swelled with ferocious hostility. Old K looked at her and fell silent for a moment.
“What are your plans now?”
Nell said in a soft voice, “Of course, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth!”
“You’re planning to work alone?”
“Is there a problem?”
Old K hesitated.
Nell looked at him and frowned. “When did you learn to stop talking in the middle of saying something?”
Old K. “...”
He said helplessly. “I heard that you’re with Gideon Leith now. Why not ask him for help? It’ll be effortless for him to destroy a little family like the Jennings.”
Nell smiled wryly.
Old K wondered if it was just his imagination, but he felt that her eyes grew colder than before at the mention of that man.
“I don’t need an outsider to interfere with my affairs.”
After a pause, she stood up. “Alright, thank you for informing me about this. I’ll transfer the money to you later.”
Nell finished speaking and turned and walked away.
At the same time, a black Rolls-Royce passed by the cafe. The person in the car inadvertently glanced out the window and saw a familiar figure.
The woman was dressed in black and white casual clothes and wore a cap on her head. She walked out of the cafe with her head slightly lowered.
He paused slightly before ordering Matthew to stop the car.
He was about to get out of the car when he saw another man quickly walk out of the cafe and call out to her.
