His expression was profoundly serious and sincere. Hearing his words and seeing the absolute resolve in his eyes, Bernice seemed to believe him, and her rigid posture slowly relaxed.
She placed Lizetta's hand inside Remington's and clasped them together. "Husband and wife must stand by each other through everything. Now that you have a child, it's more important than ever."
Lizetta and Remington nodded in unison. Only then did a genuine smile return to Bernice's face. She looked at Nelson with overwhelming relief.
"Old man, Elsa is healthy and so happy. Am I dreaming?"
Nelson patted her hand and gently placed Joy into her arms.
"You're not dreaming. If you don't believe me, give the baby a kiss."
Holding Joy close, Bernice leaned in and placed a gentle kiss on his cheek. Inhaling the sweet, milky scent of the baby, her face broke into a massive grin, her deep wrinkles crinkling with sheer happiness.
Nelson turned his head away, letting out a heavy sigh to suppress the heat prickling behind his own eyes.
He turned back to face Remington and Lizetta.
"I've chosen two names for Joy, but I can't decide between them. I want to see what you two think."
Lizetta immediately perked up. The old man pulled two folded pieces of paper from his pocket and handed one to each of them.
Lizetta unfolded hers to see the name 'Zane' written elegantly in calligraphy, meaning gentle and noble like a fine wood.
She leaned over to look at Remington's paper, which read 'Jasper', meaning a profound blessing and a beautiful prospect.
Both names sounded beautiful and carried wonderful meanings.
Lizetta looked up at Remington and asked.
"Which one do you like better?"
Remington kept his eyes on her. "I love both of them. Whatever you prefer is fine with me."
Lizetta took his piece of paper and stared at the two names, reading them back and forth.
