The man winced in pain, yet a slight curve tugged at the corner of his mouth as he finally pulled back.
"That hurts, sweetheart. I promise you, this isn't a dream."
At that moment, the dam broke. The reality of it all crashed down on her, and wild, unadulterated ecstasy consumed her heart.
She gripped his arms with desperate strength. "What exactly happened? Where is Joy right now? Remington, we need to go find him right now!"
Remington cupped her cheeks, trying to wipe her tears away.
But his palms were already soaked. Her tears were like a broken faucet, flowing endlessly.
He knew these were tears of sheer joy. Had he not been exactly the same way in the car after leaving the police station?
Joey had only seen him laughing, completely missing the tears of pure gratitude falling from the corners of his eyes.
He didn't try to stop her from crying. Instead, he leaned over, grabbed the remote from the nightstand, and slowly opened the curtains.
Golden sunlight poured into the room. Remington raised a hand to shield her eyes from the glare and spoke softly.
"Don't panic. Take a breath, and I'll explain everything."
Lizetta had already been crying, and the sudden burst of bright light stung her eyes with a burning ache.
Yet, she didn't feel the slightest bit of discomfort. Instead, she kept her eyes wide open, staring at him.
The sharp sting only proved this was real. The sunlight felt incredibly warm and liberating, as if it were illuminating the darkest, most secret corners of her soul.
Remington gently ruffled her hair, stood up, and went to the bathroom to wring out a warm towel. Using his thumb to tilt her face up, he carefully wiped her face clean before handing her the phone with the DNA report Ray had sent him.
Lizetta stared at the paternity test results on the screen, her fingers trembling violently.
"I placed that baby in the casket myself. I snipped that lock of hair with my own hands right before they sent him into the crematorium. That stillborn was never Joy. It was Eartha leaving herself an out—she bribed the doctor and swapped our baby with a dead infant she prepared in advance!"
