“Laurence, I’m your uncle. I even carried you in my arms when you were but a baby.”
Tony asked anxiously, “We haven’t seen each other in thirty years, and I have lots and lots I want to talk to you about. Are you not willing to even have a meal together?”
In terms of seniority, he was Laurence’s second cousin once removed.
Tony and the previous family head were second cousins, and his grandfather and Laurence’s great-grandfather were half-siblings with different mothers. It was just that Laurence’s great-grandfather had been born to the first wife, and had been raised as the heir since young, while Tony’s grandfather had been born to the second wife, and thus had no chance at the family head’s seat, so he became a branch family.
Despite being born to the same father, because of the difference in status, his descendants also lost their chance at the head of the family position and grew distant from the center of power.
That was why Tony was so unwilling to accept defeat. While his father was alive, he had been the same and had done various petty little things in secret. Tony had seen this growing up and it was due to his father’s influence that he was so singlemindedly bent on taking the seat of the family head.
He wanted to change the rule that the family head position would always be passed on to the legitimate branch but kept his desires hidden very well. On the surface, Tony maintained such a good relationship with the family head and seemed very loyal to him, but in secret, Tony went all over to gather support and schemed to wipe out his family and take his place.
Laurence smiled but it was mirthless. “Don’t you suspect that I’m a fake? There are tons of people surnamed Longbottom and I’m not even the only one named Laurence. We’ve been at loggerheads all this while, and you’re believing me so easily?”
Tony spluttered before replying, “You’re not the only one named Laurence Longbottom out there, yes, but you look very much like your father. Your father and I were as close as brothers. We grew up together and I was very close to him.”
He had gotten married early and had kids early too. Laurence’s father, on the other hand, was younger than him and had married late. He had only started having kids a few years after getting married, too, and Laurence was his youngest child, so the age gap was big.
Manny and Laurence were considered to be of the same generation, but Laurence was only in his early thirties, while Manny was already well into his fifties.
“Before you turned one, I carried you often, and I pretty much watched you grow until you were one. Even if I wanted to doubt you, I couldn’t. You simply look so much like him.
