“Was that Chelsea and her family?” Jasmine asked Serenity after they settled down.
“It must be. She’s been living a comfortable life. She’s even dressed in expensive clothes and jewelry.”
Before Liberty got a divorce, Chelsea and Mrs. Brown would go to the bookstore to complain to Serenity. Jasmine had met Chelsea several times before.
Chelsea had left such an impression that Jasmine could not possibly forget her.
“It is Chelsea.”
Serenity replied, “Lucas called Sonny twice, but Chelsea covered his mouth. She’s scared of us joining her for dinner and making her pay.
“In the past, she and her family would go to Liberty’s house to eat for free. They never helped out and even dared to order my sister around and pick on her.”
The Browns were like leopards who would never change their spots.
Serenity felt Wiltspoon was tiny. She would bump into people she disliked from time to time.
Imogen did not know what happened in the past. She kept quiet and simply listened.
Jasmine said, “That family is really weird. I thought they’d change after so many things had happened. I guess we thought too highly of them.”
“There was a period when Chelsea was on Liberty’s side. She defended Liberty against Jessica because I saved Lucas.
“After Jessica went to jail, Chelsea stopped behaving that way because she thought she had repaid us. She often badmouthed Duncan in front of Sonny to stop Liberty and Duncan from getting married.”
Jasmine immediately told Sonny, “Don’t listen to their nonsense, Sonny. Duncan is a good man. He treats you and your mom well. Don’t believe a word your father or aunt says about him.”
Sonny nodded. “I know, Jas. I love Dunc the most now. I want him to be my second dad.”
Liberty had explained to Sonny the difference between a biological father and a stepfather—the latter was his father too. Liberty said that if she were to marry Duncan, then Duncan would have to raise him with her and the man would have fulfilled the obligation of a parent. Therefore, Sonny had to respect Duncan, be a filial child, and never be an ingrate.
Sonny vowed that he would never be ungrateful.
“I’ve been taking care of him since he was a baby. He’s almost four years old now. How can I possibly not have any influence on him?
“Sonny plays his heart out whenever he can have fun, but he’s very obedient when he’s out with adults. He never disturbs us.”
Imogen said, “A child like that is literally an angel. I wish I could have an angelic baby like Sonny when I get married in the future.”
Jasmine teased, “You should win Dylan’s heart before thinking about that.”
“He doesn’t love me. I thought I’d try to fight for him, but I’m not that confident anymore.”
Imogen said, “Everyone says the York family’s men are loyal to relationships. If Dylan has fallen in love with someone else, he’ll never love me, no matter how hard I try. Why should I continue clinging to him?”
Jasmine said to Serenity, “This sounds like Elisa’s situation.”
Imogen replied, “Don’t you ladies think my words make sense?”
