Tyrone couldn’t stay by Alicia’s side for long. He’d sneaked away just to be with her for the birth of their children—now that both she and the babies were safe and sound, he needed to leave as soon as possible.
There was still a mountain of business waiting for him back home.
“Alicia, I’ll be waiting for you,” Tyrone murmured, ruffling her hair before glancing down at the two tiny newborns.
Fatherhood felt nothing like he’d imagined. Tyrone had always thought he’d hate being a dad. But now, with these two delicate, wriggling infants nestled in his arms, something inside him shifted. Everything changed.
These were his children—his and Alicia’s.
Life was strange, he thought. One small person could bring two new lives into the world, so fragile and perfect.
He pressed a kiss to Alicia’s hair and spoke again, his voice low. “The Edwards family isn’t as simple as they seem. Word is, he’ll be coming to Italy soon for business, and to visit his sister. Don’t get too close to him.”
Alicia nodded, biting her lip, her separation anxiety obvious.
It was probably the postpartum hormones, but her eyes were red and she was fighting back tears, trying not to look too emotional. If Tyrone saw her cry, he wouldn’t be able to leave with a calm heart.
“Winnie and Easton are here, and Yvonne and Sean Quinn won’t be heading back home for now,” Tyrone reassured her. “You won’t be lonely. Italy is much safer for you than going back right now. No matter how far those people reach, they’d have a hard time getting to you here—and Sean Quinn’s got your back, too.”
“You don’t need to worry about me,” Alicia whispered, hugging him tight. “Just take care of yourself, and don’t risk exposing yourself.”
The twins were incredibly well-behaved, almost as if they’d come into the world to repay a kindness. They hardly ever cried—except for a soft wail when they were hungry, and the rest of the time, even when awake, they’d just lie there smiling, content.
Maybe that’s what it meant to be a child—no worries at all.
Tyrone checked the time. It was almost time to go.
Suddenly remembering something, he cupped Alicia’s chin and kissed her again, voice dropping to a warning. “Vincent Lawson is coming here, too. He’ll want to see you. Before I left, I asked him to look out for you. There are some things you can let him handle, but don’t get too close to him in private.”
Alicia laughed softly, recognizing Tyrone’s jealousy all too well.
