In the end, Clayton didn’t show up to Natalia’s birthday party.
Jade White sat at the head of the table, a sly smile curling on her lips. “Didn’t you say Clayton would be here? Looks like your so-called influence isn’t worth much after all.”
Jade was in high spirits. She liked to think of herself as a class above Natalia, but whenever Natalia started talking about Clayton, it inexplicably put her in a foul mood.
Her feelings for Clayton had always been complicated—she looked down on him, the White family’s loyal hound, yet secretly wished she could be the only one he’d ever be loyal to.
But Clayton didn’t belong to anyone. He belonged only to Reginald’s real granddaughter, the true Nicole White.
Jade gave a cold, bitter laugh. She’d envied Nicole before, but Nicole hadn’t been found yet—so all Jade could really envy was a title.
Natalia was a different story. She was just the housekeeper’s daughter. How dare she even dream of someone as untouchable as Clayton? The thought was laughable.
Across the table, Natalia’s expression was equally sour. Sure, she and Jade had been partners in crime, and Jade had definitely helped her reach this point. But Natalia still couldn’t stand Jade’s arrogant, lady-of-the-house attitude. After all, Jade was just the daughter of some illegitimate affair—hardly someone who should act like royalty.
Yet there Jade sat, acting like she owned the place.
Just as Jade was basking in her own triumph, the private room’s door swung open. A dozen people filed in, each carrying flowers, a birthday cake, and armfuls of limited-edition designer gifts.
“Miss Natalia, Mr. Clayton asked us to come celebrate your birthday. These are his gifts to you. He couldn’t make it in person, but he insisted you receive them.”
Natalia shot to her feet, stunned, her eyes lighting up as she took in the handbags, jewelry, and shoes—every last item something she adored.
She rushed forward to embrace the bouquet, cheeks flushing with excitement.
Who could resist a man this romantic?
“Oh my god, Natalia, what’s going on? Clayton from White Corporation? He’s gorgeous!”
“I heard he’s always cold and distant, never gives any woman the time of day. You’re the first he’s ever gone out of his way for. Looks like you two are about to be official!”
