When she came to, a man wearing a baseball cap and a surgical mask stood over her, holding a video camera.

Terrified, Lena stared up at him, her voice trembling as she pleaded, “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. Give me another chance… I promise I’ll get the job done.”

“Natalia’s already given you plenty of chances,” the man replied, his voice cold and low. “What’s the matter, Lena? Starting to catch real feelings for Easton? Is that why you can’t go through with it?”

Lena shook her head frantically, tears streaming down her face. “Please, just give me one more chance. I swear, I’d never betray Natalia. Scales has a video of me—he knows about my HIV. He’s got me in a vise. I’m begging you, I would never betray Natalia. Please, have mercy.”

Lena was never one for courage. With the right scare, she spilled everything.

The man scoffed, letting the camera roll. He pulled down his mask and cap, and Lena finally recognized him—Easton’s old friend from the university gaming café.

His name was Ablett. He was a loner, a tech genius from a poor family who couldn’t afford college tuition but was desperate to learn. He worked as a night manager at the internet café near campus, and when things got really bad, he’d even slept under bridges. Easton had been his savior, the one person he’d go to the ends of the earth for.
