All the blame now pointed squarely at Lawson & Co. The fact that they’d tricked Tyrone into investing in a doomed project was hardly something they could spin in a positive light.
Many former partners and clients who once did business with Lawson & Co. quickly shifted their allegiance to Evercrest Group.
Evercrest Group had always been their chief rival, but now Lawson & Co. suffered blow after blow, hemorrhaging both business and reputation.
“Dad, you really should’ve thought about this when you decided to set Tyrone up,” Vincent said, a faint smirk on his lips as he lounged back in his chair, as if none of this surprised him.
Even he hadn’t expected Alicia’s counterattack to land so hard.
It was a devastating blow—Lawson & Co. had been blindsided.
“Chairman, the board is in chaos. Our stock price is tanking. Partners are abandoning us for Evercrest Group left and right. If this keeps up, public opinion is going to bury us,” an executive said anxiously, desperate for Stephen to deliver a solution.
“Chairman! Bad news!” The secretary burst in, panic etched on her face. “You have to see the headlines—people are saying Tyrone was swindled out of hundreds of millions, then died under mysterious circumstances. The police suspect murder, and now all the fingers are pointing at Lawson & Co.!”
Tyrone was dead. The police hadn’t found the killer, but the evidence of foul play was clear.
And the more mysterious the case became, the more suspicion fell on Lawson & Co.
Stephen had thought he was being clever—he’d taken the money, someone else had cleaned up the mess, and he believed no one would ever trace it back to him.
But the public didn’t care who’d pulled the trigger. Until the real culprit was found, Lawson & Co. would be everyone’s prime suspect.
Stephen slumped into his chair, stunned and terrified. In a matter of days, he’d lost most of his shares, and now the scandal threatened to consume the entire company.
