But what he saw now was completely different from what everyone had been expecting.
There was no show of force, no putting the newcomer in his place. In fact, Harrison personally introduced his younger brother to everyone, a clear sign of how much he valued him.
And Carter, the one everyone assumed was ruthlessly ambitious, stayed obediently by his brother's side the entire time, the adoration and respect in his eyes impossible to hide.
They were the very picture of brotherly harmony.
It was a stunning sight for all the onlookers.
Crystal had gone to great lengths to sneak in with a wealthy heir. Now, hiding in a corner, she stared intently at Carter.
When she finally saw him slip outside alone for some fresh air, she quickly followed him.
"Carter!"
Carter turned, and the relaxed expression on his face instantly chilled when he saw Crystal, the last person he expected to see here.
"What are you doing here?"
"I came to find you, of course!" Crystal complained. "Why haven't you been answering my calls?"
"Why are you looking for me?"
"It's about Mom! The Lancasters are sending her to prison, don't you know? Are you just going to let it happen?"
Carter's expression turned to ice.
After a moment of silence, he said, "The Lancasters haven't hidden any of this from me. I know everything."
Crystal's eyes widened. "You know, and yet you—"
"But why should I help her?" he interrupted. "Don't you know perfectly well what she's done?"
"But she raised you for all those years—"
"She raised me with the Lancaster family's money!" Carter retorted coldly. "And I can hardly say she raised me at all. How much has she ever cared for me? You know the answer to that better than anyone."
