Seeing her daughter in such a state, Mrs. Lockwood grew worried and immediately stood up to follow.
But just then, Anastasia spoke.
“Yolanda, are you really feeling unwell? Or are you afraid of what your parents will hear me say next?”
At her words, Mr. and Mrs. Lockwood looked completely bewildered. “What are you talking about, Ms. Sterling?”
Before Anastasia could answer, Yolanda, as if facing something terrifying, raised her voice in a desperate plea. “Mom, I really feel awful. Let’s go home—now!”
Her condition was clearly abnormal. Her face was deathly pale. Mrs. Lockwood was about to give in to her daughter’s wishes.
But Anastasia’s calm voice cut through the tension. “Yolanda, were you really the one the Lockwood family was supposed to adopt?”
The color drained from Mr. and Mrs. Lockwood’s faces. “—What do you mean by that, Ms. Sterling?!”
Yolanda was already as white as a sheet. She tugged at her mother, trying to pull her away, but Mrs. Lockwood was now captivated by Anastasia's words.
“Please answer my earlier questions, Mrs. Lockwood. Where did you adopt Yolanda? And why?”
“Mom!!” Yolanda shrieked, clutching Mrs. Lockwood’s arm, her eyes red. “Anastasia is just trying to hurt me! Nothing good can come from her words! Let’s not listen, let’s just go!”
Mrs. Lockwood hesitated.
But Mr. Lockwood had already sensed something was wrong. He glanced at Yolanda, then stood his ground and answered Anastasia. “Over a decade ago, my wife was out when she was injured in an accident. Yolanda happened to find her, stopped the bleeding in time, and called for help, saving her life.”
“We later learned that Yolanda was a child from an orphanage in Fairhaven. Since we couldn’t have children of our own, we adopted her.”
