Just as the atmosphere grew tense, someone came over to speak with Harrison.
Naomi had clearly sensed that Timothy had just provoked Harrison. Seizing the opportunity, she quickly pulled her brother away.
Timothy was reluctant, but he didn't argue with his sister. As he left, however, he turned back to glance at Anastasia one more time, offering her a smile that made her deeply uncomfortable.
She frowned.
“That’s Timothy, Naomi’s brother.” Marcus leaned in slightly and whispered to her, “That guy is bad news. Stay away from him.”
Anastasia glanced at Harrison, who was now in conversation with someone else, then looked back at Marcus with a hint of amusement. “Even you think he’s bad news?”
Marcus replied, “...What’s that supposed to mean?”
“As far as I know, in many people’s eyes, you’re not exactly a saint either,” Anastasia said politely.
It was only after coming to Riverton that she learned just how bad Marcus’s reputation was.
It seemed Mr. Jackson had certainly sowed his wild oats over the years.
Marcus was speechless.
He tried to save face. “I was young and liked to have fun, what’s wrong with that? Besides, I've been a perfect gentleman since my engagement.”
“And compared to Timothy, I’m practically a saint. My rule is that everything has to be consensual. Timothy’s different. Once he sets his sights on someone, he’ll get them, whether they’re willing or not.”
“Do you know why he went abroad? Naomi went to study, but he went to hide. A few years ago, his behavior got more and more out of control until he was responsible for someone’s death. The scandal was so big that even the Lawson family couldn't cover it up, so they had to send him away to let the heat die down.”
Marcus’s tone was filled with dislike for Timothy.
