“That man… my mother’s boyfriend, where was he from?”

“Your mother never said. She was traveling all over the world back then, so I’m not sure where she met him.”

“Why the sudden interest?” her grandmother asked, puzzled.

Anastasia answered vaguely, testing the waters. “I heard something from my father… from Gabriel.”

“What unpleasant thing did he say now?” her grandmother grumbled. “I heard he and that wife of his followed you to Riverton. His stepdaughter is there too, isn't she? Have they been bullying you? Did they say something to slander your mother’s name?”

She sounded both angry and anxious, worried that Anastasia was alone and vulnerable in Riverton.

Anastasia quickly reassured her and then dropped the subject.

It seemed her grandmother didn’t know she wasn’t Gabriel’s biological daughter.

The phone call didn’t yield many clues, but Anastasia wasn’t too disappointed.

She composed herself and prepared to head out.

Just then, she saw on the news that Nora and Gabriel had been taken into police custody.
