The moment Juliet saw her, she pulled her aside and whispered, “Lauren’s still locked up. My brother thinks she might actually do time for this!”
“But I looked it up, and even if she does, it’ll only be for a few years. She’s getting off way too easy!”
Anastasia offered a faint smile, her eyes darkening for a fraction of a second.
A few years in prison?
*Not a chance. I’m not letting Lauren off that easily.*
Just then, a message buzzed on her phone. Her contact reported that Lauren’s mentor, Otto, was working tirelessly to get her exonerated. He asked if they should block all of Otto’s efforts and ensure Lauren rotted in prison for life.
Anastasia smiled to herself. Otto was certainly devoted to his student.
She slowly typed her reply:
[No need. Since Otto wants her out so badly, let’s give him a hand.]
She put her phone away just as she and Juliet walked through the door.
“Oh, my dear Ana, you came all this way dressed so lightly? It’s freezing out there! Come in, come in.”
Her grandmother had been waiting for her. The old woman rushed forward and took her hand, her face beaming with an irrepressible, loving smile.
Her grandmother’s hand was warm, and Anastasia’s eyes curved into a gentle crescent as she let the old woman lead her inside.
