The statement left Anastasia and Benson completely stunned. Harrison’s eyes, however, flickered with a thoughtful expression.
Murray, Winni, and the other elders were clearly not surprised by this revelation.
“My mother… wasn’t a Brennan? Then who was she?”
“We don’t know,” the old woman sighed, squeezing Anastasia’s hand. “We found her. It was the dead of winter, and she was just a baby, wrapped in a single swaddling cloth, nearly frozen to death beside a dumpster. We brought her home, but she was so weak for so long… we almost didn’t manage to save her.”
Anastasia was still reeling from the shock when another question surfaced. “Then, Grandpa, why are you telling me this now?”
In her past life, she had never known that her mother, Cecilia, wasn’t a biological Brennan. Her grandparents had kept it a secret for so many years. Why reveal it now?
“There might be something complicated about your mother’s origins,” the old man said gravely. “Her death seems to be connected to her past. The people behind it are very powerful. The Brennan family has been investigating for years, but we’ve never found any solid leads.”
He looked at Anastasia, hesitating before continuing. “You probably don’t remember, but when you were little, while your mother was still alive, you were in danger twice. If it weren’t for sheer luck, you wouldn’t have made it.”
“At the time, we thought they were just accidents. But while investigating your mother’s death, we found evidence suggesting that those incidents were deliberate attempts on your life.”
He had his reasons for so decisively adopting and grooming Lauren to be Cecilia’s successor.
But he had already wronged Anastasia, and offering excuses now felt hollow and shameful.
