Reassured, Lauren waited.
However, half an hour after Anastasia made the call, Mr. Lynn and the other senior directors appeared at the hospital room door.
The color vanished from Lauren's face.
The directors looked furious. Anastasia hadn't given them the full story over the phone, but the moment they saw the Brennans gathered around Lauren, their mood soured.
They entered the room and first greeted Anastasia respectfully. "Miss Sterling, we're here."
Then, without waiting for her to speak, Mr. Lynn turned to Mr. Brennan. "Why have you summoned us here today, sir? Is it about Lauren again? Wasn't it enough to place her at Unison Pharma? What more do you want?"
"Don't forget, sir, that Unison Pharma was left to Miss Sterling by her mother. It has nothing to do with some adopted daughter!"
"That's right!" another director chimed in. "This Ms. Brennan is just an adopted child, yet she's been at Unison Pharma for years under the guise of an internship. Meanwhile, our Miss Sterling has yet to be properly introduced to the company! Is it true what the rumors say, that you've abandoned your own granddaughter for an outsider and plan to hand over her inheritance to a stranger?!"
He couldn't believe it. Everything Anastasia had said was true. In fact, judging by the directors' outrage, Lauren's actions had been even more egregious than described.
"Lauren?" The rest of the family stared at her, utterly shocked. The Lauren they knew was noble and virtuous. She had even expressed guilt over taking Anastasia's place as heir and promised to always be grateful. But now it seemed she had been coveting Anastasia's company and lying to their faces.
"Lauren, is what they're saying true?" Winni asked, her voice strained with disbelief. Just moments ago, she had been defending Lauren, convinced Anastasia was being petty and dishonest. But could the directors be lying too? The thought that the girl she had raised might have a hidden, darker side sent a chill through her.
