Lauren took a deep breath and tried to explain. “I never said… I was going to be the next CEO of the company—”
But her explanation fell flat. True, she’d never outright claimed she was the future boss, but she’d never denied it either.
And it wasn’t as if she hadn’t heard the rumors. In fact, everyone in the company had been whispering about it for so long that it practically became an unspoken fact. Some people even joked and called her “Chairwoman” right to her face. How could Lauren possibly pretend she didn’t know?
“I can’t believe it, Ms. Lauren Brennan—no, just Lauren, turns out to be this kind of person!”
“She always acted like she owned the place. I thought she was the founder’s real daughter, but she’s just adopted...”
“Even being adopted would be fine if the founder had left the company to her in her will, but Unison Pharma Ltd. was meant to be a legacy for her real daughter. How could Lauren shamelessly stake a claim?”
“How can someone be so brazen? The family took her in, and instead of being grateful, she’s eyeing the real daughter’s inheritance…”
The whispers from the crowd slipped straight into Lauren’s ears. Seeing the mixture of disbelief and contempt in their eyes, she felt as though she’d been slapped, her cheeks burning with humiliation and rage boiling in her chest.
“Anastasia! You—”
“What? Did I say anything untrue?” Anastasia cut her off, her voice sharp. “Honestly, I’m amazed you even have the nerve to show up here.”
She didn’t bother to hide her disdain. “I don’t like disgusting people polluting my space. I’ll give you three minutes—get out of Unison Pharma Ltd.”
Lauren stared at her in shock and fury. “Anastasia! You—”
Anastasia glanced at her watch, unfazed. “One minute’s already gone. If you won’t leave on your own, I don’t mind getting some help.”
With a flick of her hand, she gestured to the security team behind her.
“Miss Anastasia!” someone suddenly protested in outrage. “Ms. Lauren Brennan is the chairman’s daughter too—how could you do this?”
It was Regan, the general manager. Anastasia turned to him, her lips curling into a cold smile.
She hadn’t even gotten around to dealing with him, yet here he was, throwing himself into the fire.
Ignoring his protest, Anastasia cut straight to the point. “Regan, what were my mother’s instructions to you before she passed?”
Her mother’s instructions? Of course—she’d told him to protect Unison Pharma Ltd. until Anastasia came of age, and then hand it over to her.
At her question, Regan stiffened, realizing Anastasia was about to hold him accountable.
But if he dared to side so openly with Lauren, it meant he was more than ready for a confrontation. Why would he be afraid of a nineteen-year-old girl?
