"I did as you asked and got in touch with Mr. Lockwood at the Global Harmony Medical Institute."
"At first, when he heard what we were proposing, Mr. Lockwood was furious. But this morning, after seeing madam’s test scores and her answers, she called me immediately..."
On the phone, Mr. Lockwood was practically beside herself with excitement. She said she’d wrap up her work and drive straight back from Riverton.
"I tried to sound her out. With such an incredible score, didn’t she suspect there might’ve been some cheating involved? But Mr. Lockwood said... the way madam approached the questions just couldn’t be faked. Some of her answers were things even Lockwood had never thought of, ideas she’d never even heard before. Yet, when they tested them, they actually worked!"
The more Logan spoke, the more his voice seemed to drift, as if he could hardly believe it himself.
For the first time, a look of genuine shock crossed Harrison’s normally calm and unreadable face.
Thud. Thud.
Suddenly, footsteps sounded on the stairs. Anastasia was finally awake and coming down.
She was bundled up in a fluffy robe and slippers, rubbing her eyes as she shuffled sleepily towards the foyer.
"Darling?"
She’d barely mumbled the word when, in a blur, Harrison strode over and scooped her up as if she weighed nothing.
His expression was stern as he delivered a light slap to the softest part of her hip. "How many times do I have to tell you? Be careful on the stairs. Are you ignoring everything I say?"
Anastasia wrapped her arms around his neck, flopped contentedly against his shoulder, and gave a drowsy little hum. "But I was in a hurry to find you..."
When she lifted her head and spotted Logan, she seemed to shake off some of her grogginess. Calmly, she asked, "So, the results are out, right?"
Logan was momentarily speechless.
Was she a little too calm about this?
Was this the ultimate level of showing off?
"...They’re out," he managed.
He dipped his head and pressed a kiss to her cheek, his palm lingering on her face. "I just never realized… My Ana is this brilliant."
For once, Harrison’s words rang with true sincerity.
He was honestly stunned.
All this time… he realized he’d underestimated his Ana.
Anastasia couldn’t help the way her smile broadened, pride radiating from her in an unmistakable glow.
—Only with Harrison did she ever allow herself to act like this: a little girl showing off to the one person whose approval she craved.
"I can do even more, you know!" she blurted, but immediately bit her tongue before she could say more about his illness.
