Anastasia knew her all too well and saw right through her little scheme in a heartbeat.
With a cold, almost mocking smile, Anastasia fixed her with an icy stare. “Hard evidence, huh? By all means, Penelope—enlighten us. What evidence do you have?”
Penelope shot back, “Samuel gave Juliet a Valentine’s Day gift, and Sandra caught them red-handed. Isn’t that proof enough?!”
“And Samuel admitted it himself—the scarf he got was from Juliet!”
She turned her words into a weapon, her tone sharp and accusing. “Anastasia, I know you can’t stand Sandra, so you sent Juliet to go after her boyfriend on purpose. If you’re bold enough to do it, why not admit it? Why drag my name through the mud?”
No one played the victim like Penelope. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears, her lips trembled, and she looked like she might collapse from sheer injustice. Instantly, several of the guys around them glared at Anastasia and Juliet in open disapproval.
—True, both Anastasia and Juliet were attractive—Anastasia, in fact, was arguably the prettiest girl in the room—but many men have a soft spot for the delicate, wounded type. Next to Anastasia’s commanding presence, Penelope seemed all the more deserving of sympathy.
Juliet was fuming—Penelope, playing the innocent again! She was so angry she could barely get the words out. “Penelope! Y-You’re the one—”
Anastasia gently placed a hand on her cousin’s arm and stepped in front of her, shielding her from the crossfire.
Juliet was too gentle for this kind of confrontation—she was the sweet, well-behaved girl who always followed the rules. This was Anastasia’s battlefield.
Juliet was on the verge of exploding, but seeing Anastasia’s calm, unruffled composure immediately helped her regain her own. She obediently stood behind her cousin, shooting Penelope a furious glare.
—She adored Anastasia, almost to the point of blind faith.
With her cousin here, Penelope didn’t stand a chance. Hmph!
Penelope, seeing Anastasia’s unshakable confidence, felt a sudden pang of anxiety. She’d suffered too many defeats at Anastasia’s hands to ignore that feeling.
“Penelope, I have just a few questions for you,” Anastasia said coolly, folding her arms and looking Penelope straight in the eye. Her gaze alone seemed to press down on her.
Anastasia didn’t miss a beat. Her voice was sharp. “So Samuel admitted it. Did Juliet?”
Penelope opened her mouth to argue, but Anastasia’s eyes glinted with amusement as she pressed on, “If it involves both of them, why is Samuel’s word automatically true, and Juliet’s automatically false? For all we know, maybe Samuel was trying to cover for the real other woman—and threw Juliet under the bus.”
Someone in the crowd murmured agreement. “That actually makes sense. I always thought Samuel admitted it way too easily, like he didn’t care what happened to Juliet…”
Penelope’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly looked down, trying to hide her panic.
“Third question—” Anastasia’s gaze sharpened, “On Valentine’s Day, Juliet went to your dorm to deliver something, didn’t she?”
Penelope’s expression changed, and she opened her mouth, ready to deny it.
But Anastasia cut her off, voice unhurried. “I wouldn’t be so quick to deny it. There were plenty of people at the dorm that day. Juliet went to deliver something—to you. And what she delivered was the very Valentine’s Day gift Samuel received from you. Want to guess how many people saw that?”
