The hospital room door opened, and Briony stepped out. Both men immediately fell silent.
“Star wants to talk to you,” Briony said to Cedric. “I spoke with her. She’s in a better state of mind now. Dr. Clarke, I hope you’ll take this chance to really listen and talk things through with her calmly.”
Cedric pressed his lips together. “I will.”
“We’ll get going then.”
“Drive safe,” Cedric said, bidding them farewell before turning back into the room.
As the door closed, Briony and Stewart walked side by side toward the elevator. Just as they arrived, the doors slid open. Maynard was inside, and he took one step out before freezing at the sight of them.
Briony and Stewart were equally surprised by the unexpected encounter. The three of them stood there for a moment, staring at each other.
Maynard was the first to break the silence, stepping out of the elevator and offering a greeting. His gaze then swept over Stewart’s bandaged hands, a flicker of disdain in his eyes. Leave it to Stewart to pull a pity ploy, he thought.
Stewart saw the cold mockery in Maynard’s eyes but didn’t care. Now that he and Briony had cleared the air between them, Maynard was irrelevant. Still, the thought of the joint social media post they had made for Lori left a sour taste in his mouth, so he didn't bother being pleasant. Just a hypocrite who took advantage of the situation.
The two men clearly held each other in low regard.
Maynard turned his attention to Briony. “Are you here to see Xenia Cooper?”
Xenia Cooper? Briony and Stewart exchanged a look. “What’s wrong with Xenia?” Briony asked, confused.
Maynard paused, realizing they hadn’t come for Xenia at all; it was just a coincidence. But he had already let it slip, so he had no choice but to explain.
“After you called me last night, I called her,” Maynard said with a sigh. “Just as you suspected, her strange behavior was a prelude to something. She slit her wrists. By the time I got there, she was already unconscious in the bathtub.”
“She tried to kill herself?!” Briony’s face paled. “Why didn’t you say anything?”
“She also swallowed a full bottle of sleeping pills. At the hospital, they had to pump her stomach while she was losing so much blood. The doctor said if I’d been any later, she would have been gone.”
Briony frowned deeply. “How is she now?”
