Nathalie picked up on Lady Sharp’s real meaning—she was being politely told to step aside. After all, with a divorce and miscarriage behind her, she was exactly the kind of woman families like the Sharps looked down on.
Her eyes shimmered with the threat of tears as she looked at Morris. “Greta’s telling the truth. Does my past bother you?”
Morris shot Greta a look so sharp it could cut glass, his eyes full of warning. He was fiercely protective of Nathalie’s pride—he wouldn’t let Greta tarnish it.
He turned to Nathalie, his voice gentle. “I’m not some uptight traditionalist. I don’t judge women who’ve been through tough times. It’s not you who’s at fault—it’s the schemers and the men who can’t stay loyal.”
Then he looked right at Greta, not caring who heard. “Don’t you agree, Greta?”
Greta’s face went pale. “I wasn’t the one meddling in someone else’s marriage. That was my sister.”
Morris didn’t let her off the hook. “Let’s not twist the facts. When you started chasing Cameron, he was married to Nellie. So who’s the real homewrecker here? And now you’re trying to play the victim? Honestly, the audacity.”
Greta had never been able to get the upper hand with Morris, and now she was both embarrassed and furious. “Cameron and I go way back. I knew him first—”
Morris cut her off. “Sure, and to save yourself, you had your so-called childhood sweetheart take a kidney from that poor girl. Once you got what you wanted, you two picked up right where you left off?”
With just a few words, Morris laid bare Greta and Cameron’s scheme. Greta was at a loss for words. “That’s not how it was...”
