Penelope hadn't even said a word, and yet they were already putting on a full drama performance.
She clapped her hands together and turned to Lauren.
"Well, since the wedding's over, could you settle the final payment?"
Lauren's bridesmaid rolled her eyes.
"Please, you only took this job to get close to Jason."
"Who are you trying to fool?"
Penelope was beyond done with these two. She grabbed her bag and turned to leave.
But before she could take a step, a drunk, overweight man blocked her path. His eyes raked over her as he grinned sleazily.
"Hey, sweetheart. If you're so desperate for money and love, why don't you try me?"
"I'll give you five grand a month. What do you say?"
Penelope looked down at his sweaty, grubby hand grabbing her wrist. Her voice was ice-cold.
"Let go."
The man chuckled, tightening his grip.
"Five grand ain't bad."
"Enough to treat yourself to fancy dinners and some makeup."
He leaned in, and Penelope grabbed the nearest wine bottle, ready to smash it over his head—
But before she could, the man was sent flying with a single kick.
Jason's voice was low, dangerous.
"She told you to let go. Didn't you hear her?"
Lauren rushed forward, grabbing Jason's arm.
"Jason, stop! That's my cousin!"
Jason suddenly handed Penelope a napkin.
"Your wrist is dirty. Wipe it off."
Lauren's face twisted as she grabbed onto Jason's arm again, her voice sickly sweet.
"Honey, I heard the CEO of Sterling Corp is hosting an exclusive event on the thirteenth floor tonight."
"If we wrap this up quickly, maybe we can meet him."
The surrounding guests gasped.
"The CEO of Sterling Corp?"
"You mean the one who conquered Wall Street at eighteen, took over his family empire at twenty-three, and shockingly got married at twenty-eight?"
"I heard he's ridiculously handsome."
"No one even knows which heiress he married."
