Rebirth: We Split Ways.. novel Chapter 10

"If you had just stayed with me, taken care of my mom, she would've lived longer!"

Penelope clawed at his hands, but his grip was like iron.

"You psycho! Let go of me!"

Jason let out a twisted, manic laugh.

"Oh, I am crazy."

"I'm gonna kill you… then myself. If I can't have you, no one can—"

For the first time in her life, Penelope felt true fear.

Was this how she was going to die? Right here, in this hospital?

No. She couldn't die.

She had a husband who loved her, a family who needed her, and... that little life growing inside her.

She refused to die.

In a split second, Penelope reached for the fire extinguisher nearby and swung it hard, smashing it against Jason's head.

With a bang, he let go of her, wincing in pain.

She used that moment to scream for help.

Jason, clutching his head, looked up at her with rage in his eyes.

"Penelope, I've loved you so much, and you're actually trying to kill me?"

He staggered toward her, his hand pulling out a paring knife.

Penelope quickly grabbed her phone and dialed Dominic 's number.

"Help! Somebody's trying to kill me!"

In that critical moment, Penelope slipped on some fruit peel and fell—straight into a pair of strong arms.

"Baby, what's happening?"

It was Dominic !

But he quickly saw Jason advancing toward them, knife raised.

"Good. Since you want this, then fine… I'll make sure you both pay."

Dominic shoved Penelope behind him, his eyes cold and sharp as a blade.

When Jason lunged, Dominic kicked him hard, sending him crashing to the ground.

"You really think you can hurt my wife?"

Within moments, hospital security rushed in and pinned Jason down, restraining him.

Dominic pulled out his phone, calling his company's legal team, his gaze never leaving Jason.

"Ready to face the consequences?"

"Your whole life from here on out is gonna be spent in prison."

Jason was furious, his face twisted in disbelief.

"Why? Why him? What makes him so much better than me?"

Dominic stood in front of Penelope, his face hard as stone.

"You claim to love her, but everything you've done has hurt her."

"That's not love. That's possession."

"Someone like you—selfish, hypocritical—you'll never know true love."

At that moment, Penelope suddenly felt nauseous, a wave of sickness hitting her.

Dominic looked panicked, his eyes full of concern.

"Baby, are you okay? What's wrong? Are you feeling sick?"

"Someone call a doctor! Where is the doctor?"

Penelope quickly waved her hand.

"I'm fine, nothing's wrong."

She could see the look in Dominic's eyes when she walked out of their home—it seemed to carry a hint of reluctance.

But in the end, he didn't try to stop her.

Without hesitation, she turned and left.

Sitting in a taxi headed for the airport again, Penelope looked at the pouring rain outside the window.

The city where she had lived for several years faintly reflected in her sight.

Unable to resist any longer, she dialed a number.

The moment the call was answered, she almost used up all her strength to speak.

"Vincent..."

Eight hours later, a private plane landed at the Seattle Airport.

Penelope was directly held in the arms of a tall and sturdy black-clad man.

With the protection of bodyguards, she was escorted onto the plane.

...

Late at night, Dominic lifted his eyes and looked out the window. The light that was always on in the bedroom upstairs was now off.

Everything around him reminded him of the woman's departure.

Kyla, sitting on his lap, felt the chilling aura emanating from him.

"We don't have to rush into marriage. Don't worry about my dad; he's just anxious because I'm pregnant..."

Her words brought Dominic's thoughts back for a moment.

He glanced at the sleeve she had just wrinkled and muttered, "Wrinkled."

Kyla instinctively released her grip.

Dominic then shoved her off, opened the car door, and stepped out.

Kyla froze for a moment, watching him leave with a cold, stern expression, unable to understand why the man who had been so gentle just moments ago now seemed like a completely different person.
