“I’m serious. Sierra told me herself,” Miranda insisted, sounding almost desperate now.
Louise didn’t even look up from her game. “No way. I don’t buy it.” She tapped away at her screen, acting as if nothing in the world could bother her. The only thing she cared about was making that girl who hit her come over and apologize.
Miranda was about to say something else when there was a knock at the door.
She turned around and instantly felt her heart drop.
“Police. Is this Louise’s room?”
That got Louise’s attention. She lifted her head and saw two officers in uniform. She assumed they must have come on her uncle’s orders. “Yeah, I’m Louise. Did my uncle send you? Where’s that girl? Why didn’t you bring her here so she could confess and apologize?”
Miranda quickly snapped, “Louise, don’t say another word.”
Louise just shrugged, totally unfazed. “I’m just saying what’s true. Didn’t Uncle say she was taken to the station already? Why isn’t she here yet? I want to go home. I can’t stand it here. It’s awful.”
The two officers didn’t respond, letting Louise talk, just listening to see if she would slip up and say something useful.
Miranda, remembering what her husband had told her, stepped forward and scolded, “Louise! You’re still hurt. Quit messing around.”
That finally made Louise pause. She remembered that Miranda had told her to cooperate with the officers and not let them realize she was faking.
She muttered, “Okay, I get it.”
One of the officers came over and showed his badge. “I’m Ashton, and this is Emilio.”
“We’re with the First Detective Unit. We’ll be handling your case from now on.”
