She never would have guessed Lucinda would react like this after finding out the truth. Hadn’t she always treated her well? Couldn’t she be Lucinda’s mother?
Lydia spoke up again, her voice cold and steady. “Grace, you sent your own daughter to live with the Norwoods. Even if you stayed close, she still won’t recognize you as her mother. So what was the point?”
“That’s impossible!” Lucinda suddenly screamed. “You’re lying! How could Grace be my real mom? She’s always been there for me, always doing what’s best for me, but that was just to make sure I became the real Norwood heiress. So I could marry Connor!”
Grace lunged forward, pulling Lucinda into a tight grip. Her nails dug painfully into Lucinda’s shoulders. “Yes, that’s right. Everything I did is for you. The Norwood fortune, the engagement to Connor, all of it is yours, my daughter. If we get rid of Lydia, everything will belong to you.”
Lucinda couldn’t take it anymore. She shoved Grace away and shouted, “Why? If I’m your daughter, why did you make me live with the Norwoods? Why did you stay in my life at all? What was the real reason for all of this?”
She never expected that tonight would be the night she found out the truth about who she really was.
Grace’s tears spilled over. She hadn’t expected Lydia to lay everything out in the open like this, forcing Lucinda to face it all at once. Grace had planned to handle Lydia first, then sit down and talk to her daughter about everything.
“Lucinda, I wrote it all in that letter, but things got messed up and you lost it. I never meant to keep this from you for so long. I had my reasons. It’s really complicated.”
It finally clicked for Lucinda. That’s why Grace had given her the black card and the phone. Everything started to make sense.
